A decent series that has unfortunately overstayed its welcome

New Super Mario Bros is a series of platformer games made by Nintendo in the mid-late 2000's. Seen as successors to their classic Mario platformer lineup from the NES/SNES era, while they were financially successful and were hardly bad games, they overall leave a lot to be desired in terms of design. It's too bad, because the first game was rather good and creative, at least compared to the sequels. It was about as "New" as New Super Mario Bros. was going to get.

The single biggest issue with this series is that contrary to its title says, there is very little "New" about the New Super Mario Bros. series. It is very repetitive and uncreative through four (five if you count Luigi U). The games are so interchangeable you're better off just playing one game, and leaving it at that. The enemies are all the same, the graphics are all the same, the plot is all the same, the gimmicks are all the same, the music is all the same. Everything is the same in this series.

For successors to the classic 2D Marios, I can't help but be disappointed in the constant re-hashing the New series does. The Game Boy Mario games were more creative and had more spirit than the New series.

That said, these are still decent games worth a look. They have good level design, good control, the very basics of what makes games good, but they're not all-time classics.
