Refreshing take

The OC, Obaz, is developed throughout the story through various story arcs that make him struggle and sacrifice in order to protect himself and the people he comes to care about. A fresh take is that the OC is actually rather weak compared to the RWBY cast and has to face said reality in every scrap he gets into.

The author develops the story alongside RWBY canon and thus there is very little rehashing of canon material which seems especially prevalent in RWBY fanfiction.

The story is very good with Obaz chasing after the clues to his true identity with entertaining side villains such as the mad (insane?) scientist Khiver and his two lackeys Schmots and Hank providing comic relief up till about the conclusion of RWBY volume 1.

After that the several O Cs that stand in as supporting characters for Obaz at Beacon Academy become especially under developed relative to the plot. Events that should be major points in the story simply do not have enough emotional impact as the characters (Such as Team STNH who are all O Cs) involved have not been explored thoroughly to show glimpses into their own lives and thus as a reader I can't relate to them very well.

This is due to the fact that the author played catch-up to the conclusion of RWBY volume 2.

Despite this, the author manages to expand the world of Remnant by introducing non-canon companies, religious sects, and facilities who are all tentatively connected in a shaky conspiracy web which are essentially hooks and bait for the reader.

All in all I'd give it a 7/10 at a minimum. The story arc so far is great, but character development for some O Cs is very shallow at the moment. Reading the author's side story [1] will help define the characters slightly but definitely not enough.
