I concur, but there will always be the Gundam equivalent of what the Transformers fandom calls “geewuners,“ and they vocally resented it for being popular long before Destiny. There was a whole anime podcast with its own trope page (or at least used to) that spent a whole season moaning about it.

From what I have seen most of the hate is leveled at Gundam Seed Destiny. There is no denying the popularity of Seed, with it being the second most successful Gundam of all times, and made Gundam relevant again. Kira, Athrun, Lacus, and Cagalli are some of the most popular characters of the decade. It's not like Panty and Stocking where the opinion ranges from "some of Gainax's best work" to "complete crap".
