I don't get the comment about the Marionette about how you can make things worse by promoting your characters too early. By the time you get up to the Marionette, you shouldn't even have gotten a single character to level 10, the minimum required to promotion, unless you engaged in some SERIOUS level grinding using Egress (or getting repeatedly defeated).
Always expect the worst and you can only be pleasantly surprised.
