"They don't observe Christmas, Easter, or birthdays, which are pagan in origin"

I'm not sure the first two are accurate. Pastor Abrahamson at Steadfast Lutherans has done a series of articles called "Redeeming Holy Days from Pagan Lies" which indicate that Christmas and Easter did not originate in pagan tradition.

{Star Trek}** exists in large part because of Tsar Nicholas II Romanov was assassinated and I don't know how to feel about that

I don't know what part of the "Deep South" the article writer lives in, but I've lived here for 31 years and have not seen any evidence that any church or churches "run things" or are integrated into government. They keep to their properties and groups. You might see them out engaging in local activities, and you might find them annoying, but I know I can go about my life without worrying about any local churches.
