I'm not sure if this falls under any particular trope, but the American forces in WWII did not refer to their tanks as "Shermans". That name came from the British practice of naming American vehicles they received thru the lend-lease agreement after Civil War Generals. The M3 medium tank has 2 variations called Grant or Lee. Thus the M4 Medium was called Sherman. Americans always called them "M4s" or other nicknames like the M 4 A 3 E 8 was called "Easy Eight"
