Zelda was often overlooked by Nintendo before Ocarina of Time. Link didn't become of the biggest game icons until then.
This simply isn't true; LTTP was one of the blockbuster games for the Super Nintendo (I remember playing it at one of the pre-release events), and in the mid-80s there was a Legend of Zeldacereal, for goodness' sake. It didn't receive the same amount of focus as Super Mario Bros., but it hardly languished in obscurity.
