It's worth noting that although everyone likes to rag on the vignettes in "Isn't It Ironic" as not being actual irony, most of them fit pretty well the definition of what's known as "cosmic irony" (also called "irony of fate"), which can be succinctly described as those situations where you feel as if the universe is unfairly screwing with you. The kind of thing that make you look up into the sky and go, "...really??"

For example, "it's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife" — it's one thing to need a knife and not find one, but if in the process of looking for a knife you find a ridiculous amount of silverware but not a single knife among them, *that's* cosmic irony.
