theFirebottle : Actually sleep learning isn't the part that's been disproved, it's sleep teaching. There have been a lot of neuro studies that have found sleep is pretty much absolutely essential to fixing what we've learned in memory and reorganizing it so that it makes more sense: here's a good article, a podcast with transcript, and this too.
I am from Brazil and a few years back a man supposedly learned Japanese, English and French during his sleep. He had three teachers, one of each language, on his dreams.
He appeared on the news at the time, showing his notebook full of kanjis, speaking with a couple of natives etc, can I post his case here? I ask because I don't really believe this is possible, so most likely he was just a fraud who rehearsed some lines or whatever. People have fooled TV reporters before.
But it's a pretty cool story that you can find on the media.
