It's no longer empty...just incredibly poorly written. I guess this is for people who have more than one artificial limb?

It is apparently for people with more than one artificial body part (the prostheses) who don't need to get them all at the same time (the "serial" part.)

Think of the Tin Woodman in the book vs. of The Wizard of Oz. His axe was cursed, and so it cut off one large body part at a time. Each time, that part was replaced by one made of tin, until we hit reductio ad absurdum and have an entire tin man. The process of creating a tin man from a human is Serial Prostheses.
