So if the portals are "synched up with the modern day, so that an hour on this side is equivalent to an hour on that side", shouldn't the "past" end of the portal still exist in the present day, linking the same amount of time into the future as the "present" end did into the past? Which is to say, if a portal in one location opens onto a portal in another location exactly 100 years into the past, you could go to the same place in modern day where the second portal was 100 years ago, and it would still be there, looking out the first portal exactly 100 years into the future.
It would only make sense for this to be the case, but it never seems to be explored.

I would like to state for the record that Time Portal is a better name for this trope than Portal to the Past, as the latter is too specific for what's going on. I think it should be renamed.
