What's the distinction between this one and Red Herring Shirt? I checked the laconic subtle trope distinctions page and didn't see an entry for these ones.
The only major distinction I could work out is that the Red Herring Shirt seems to lean (but not exclusively) towards characters who are *pretending* to be someone less important, while Not-So-Small Role isn't pretending to be someone else, just the character starts unimportant and becomes more important to the story later. Is that the real distinction or is there something else?
