I've always thought that it's the Neutral path that should pay better. It's harder to find a motivation to keep a character Neutral, whereas Good and Evil are both pretty easy whether you're roleplaying or just unthinkingly killing/rescuing everything in sight. It's also a believable reason for alternating good and evil acts (just doing whatever jobs pay the best).
