Can't remember the movie. I want to add an example - the movie was set in the middle east and is about a young woman who witnesses a bombing at the start of the movie. Then she spends all day trying to find her secret boyfriend/lover. We get to see said BF go through his day, and they barely missing each other as they both check places like the house, etc. He ends up involved with some other guys (the girl's brother, I think?) who are plotting terrorist activities. Long story short, he ends up at the bombing site (that was at the start of the movie) and gets killed. So you now realize that all the parts you thought were near misses were actually just him being there the day before, and her being there the day after. It was quite sad really.
