Re: the cutlist: This trope isn't so much meant as a protest against a Curbstomp Battle, but just to represent those actions during the battle that shows that the defenders still have a chance at victory in the future, rather than showing them to be utterly helpless, be it via a few of the attacking ships being destroyed, or the guy getting his ass handed to him managing to land a solid hit and sending his attacker back on his heels for a few moments.
No real-life/ sports examples? I'm thinking of that one (football/soccer) World Cup match in 2014 where halfway through, the score was about 0-8, and it ended up being like 1-12... which feels slightly more pathetic than if it were 0-12. When it's 0-12, you want to laugh, but when it's 1-12, you want to give them a pat on the head.
