Many people don't think that was implied at all, if you look around just on the TV Tropes pages. I, for one, still fail to see where people get the "strongly implied" part from. All there is are Dex entries saying the Ultra Beasts are capable of a lot of destruction, and Anabelle saying something about "defending" or "protecting" the battle tower.
I think we all know that the Pokedex isn't the most reliable source of information for many reasons. And "defending"/"protecting" (I think in the German version she says "verteidigen", which can mean both, but is more close to defending) the tower could very easily just mean her job there, as in, battling the trainers who challenge it.
We don't even know whether any Ultra Beasts actually entered the non-mega universe, much less destroyed it. All we know is that there was a portal which is how Anabelle got to the mega-verse.
So it is implied that the ultra beasts destroyed the pre gen 6 universe. How when they could easily be countered even without megas?
Nihilego? Just earthquake or bulldoze it.
Buzzwole looks like a bug/fighting type so any decent flying type would destroy it.
Pheromosa would require fly or flamethrower because it is not an obvious fighting type.
Celesteela? Same counter for Skarmory.
Kartana? Grass type is not obvious and fire types are very common.
Guzzlord? Looks like it could be Dark/Dragon like Hydreigon and any good ice or dragon type would be good.
Are we sure they were destroyed rather than ravaged but still inhabitable?
