Interview questions to the_biologist AKA the creator of Gungrave: Aftermath fan series.

1. What do you love most from the canon itself?

2. Do you prefer the anime or the game series?

3. The background of creating Gungrave: Aftermath series?

4. Gungrave: Aftermath series takes place after the canon. What about OD universe, which is the sequel to the first game?

5. Brandon's birthday is July 18th, 19635. Are there any specific reasons behind the date?

6. The procedure to sustain a necrolyzer/necrolyzed beings is called 'renewal therapy' in the fan series. How is that done?

7. Out of all the four sub-series you write, which one do you like most?

8. Have you ever felt that your work is better than canon?

9. How do you feel if your fan series becomes a case of ascended fanon?

10. Will you allow someone to write a fanfic of your fan series?

Hi, Wufan! Sorry a bit later than promised. Got an urgent matter earlier.

1. The characters. They are developed so well and I can mostly relate to them, especially Brandon. To some extent, I can relate to Harry, but because he reminds me of my arch-enemy here, I can't sympathize with him too much.

2. It depends on what I want actually. The anime does better than the game in term of plot (albeit flawed in execution), character development, and philosophical value, so I watch it for the plot, characters, and philosophy. However, one gotta admit that the game wins in term of the action and excitement, so if I play the game, I am there for the fun.

3. There are many reasons behind creating Gungrave: Aftermath. It's not only that I want to resolve the anime's ambiguous ending. Seeing the tiny fandom of Gungrave and how few people explore the possibility of 'if Brandon survives the anime finale', I started this fan series. Also, I always feel like there's the potential to expand on the concept of necrolyzation and add more action, which the anime series lacks.

4. Let me clarify some stuff here. From what I've read at endlessrage (dot) net, as stated by Nightow himself in the artbook, it's best to view the anime series as a separate canon from the game series. I myself view them as two separate canons not only because each of them has their own strengths (read 2), but also Nightow's words, so I won't bring OD into the fan series, except for maybe a few shout-outs to the universe.

5. It's based on personalities according to Javanese horoscope. In that astrology, there is something we call 'weton'. It's based on the day and the date we were born, and some Internet programs can find the weton. Brandon's weton with that birthday is Rabu Legi. Quiet, reserved, and watchful, Rabu Legi people are known for their strict adherence to moral codes, either personal (in Brandon's case, loyalty) or social, and they are loyal to the people they love.

6. It has yet to be explained in the series itself, so I'll just keep it short. Exchange transfusion is the main procedure, combined with massive transfusion.

7. Now that's difficult! But because I'm more into philosophy, I think Betray Me Not is my favorite.

8. Maybe I can say that some parts seem better than the canon. I think Mika becoming a case of Rescued from the Scrappy Heap in the fan series is the example. However, the creator definitely wins in creativity: merging of mafia drama and zombie stuff is not easy to do.

9. As if that's gonna happen heh. Of course that will be a pleasant surprise! But admittedly, Brandon's fate in the anime's finale is better left ambiguous rather than specified like in Gungrave: Aftermath.

10. Yes.
