Part of the reason stated for it, while it's zigzagged, points out he was carrying a wounded spy across No Man's Land at sunrise.
The thing is, while it seems like a poor choice, that is what they would have to do. They would likely get killed before getting into the British side's trenches if they tried to get in there in the dark, so they would have to wait until sunrise so that the British would be able to see who they are and what uniform they're wearing clearly.
Unfortunately, that does mean that the Germans could see them as well, but still.
