Regarding Star Trek:TOS, I can't believe they left out "The Alternative Factor." The episode overall is a compromised, convoluted mess, but the disturbing ending stays with you. The protagonist is willing to endure an eternal hell in an interdimensional chamber in order to save the universe. This type of fate is usually reserved as a symbolic "punishment" for a character. Or in the Ellison story, the unfortunate soul never asked for his fate. But in this episode, the character willingly and heroically accepts the circumstanes. Very intense, if unbearably disturbing.
