Federal regulations in the United States is a fifteen-minute break every two hours, and half hour lunch if more then six hours are worked. If a manager were to tell you to clock out and in again like that, he would be subject to some very heavy fines. Management and businesses count on employees not knowing or researching their rights, the laws, and the regulations beyond what must be legally posted, to get away with the crap they do. (Labor violations, harassment, bullying, and so on.) They also count on the intimidation factor of costing the person their job, or at least advancement, particularly when the economy is poor.

Loophole abuse can work \\\'\\\'for\\\'\\\' an employee, but they have to do the research and thoroughly CYA.
