Mane cast is a pun, but it\\\'s a pun \\\'\\\'based on\\\'\\\' ponies having manes. Each of the mane six has an element, the significance is pretty much balanced between them in episodes not focused on one or two of them, (and even in those, the significance of the rest is pretty balanced) and they are the ponies featured in murals like the one in Return Of Harmony.
If we are to look at it as the main 7, then we should call it that. Even then, though, Spike is evidently the odd one out. Whatshisgame09 mentions Celestia getting an introduction video, yet that didn\\\'t stop Celestia from being categorized outside mane cast.
