If I had to guess, I\'d say it\'s because it was somehow decided that making a story painfully over-the-top or replacing the cast with people who are nothing like their originals somehow makes it automatically good. Somewhere along the line, crazy-awesomeness became positively-correlated with accuracy and (even more inexplicably) quality in the eyes of quite a lot of people.
