Question about Lovecraft\\\'s quote about the Republican party. The addendum says that he moderated his political views later in life and \\\"endorsed FDR for President\\\" Is the last bit supposed to be evidence of his moderation? If so, is the OP aware that Franklin Roosevelt was a Democrat? It would have been perfectly consistent with Lovecraft\\\'s anti-Republican views for him to endorse FDR, so it doesn\\\'t really serve as proof that he softened his view of the GOP.

\"When an established character becomes largely different, exhibiting behavior contrary to what has been previously shown. This is not a matter of organic growth. Rather than gradually changing in response to events and experiences, a derailed character will exhibit shockingly unusual behavior that implies malfeasance or incompetence on the part of the writers.\"

Which is exactly the point that Omega Nemesis 13 made. Dismissing it as WallOfText is disrespectful.

I also bring your attention to the fact that ShockingSwerve on its page directly mentions CharacterDerailment as one of the potential reasons for a shocking development in the work. From \"legal\" standpoint, Luke\'s situation that we are discussing here does qualify as an example of both tropes.
