I originally deleted it on the grounds that there's no evidence to suggest that the pokemon Kukui uses is specifically the starter that the MC and Hau did not choose.

[[folder: XVanitas' argument]] The fact that Hau picked the starter weak to yours was a point of contention for him in a meta sense, and it then begged the question of what happened to the starter that beats the player's starter, which is always something in every game. Yes, Kukui's a veteran trainer, but you also see him with a Rockruff early on and then a Lycanroc during his actual fights. Why wouldn't it be reasonable to assume that while you were on your journey, he was training too (he does study moves after all) and also developing the Pokemon League? He could have very well been raising a team, going around the region and studying moves and helping build Alola's first Pokemon League. So, sure, we might not explicitly see what happened to the starter that the player and Hau didn't pick, but since Kukui fights you with the final evolution of that very same starter, is it not reasonable to think that he picked the unchosen starter and raised it while you and he were traveling around the region?[[/folder]]
