Who is Paul? Is he played by a \"name\" actor? Lots of films have an audience surrogate who dies early on to establish a threat.

* The titular \'\'Ken Park\'\' commits suicide in the very first scene. The movie then stops having anything to do with him until the very end.

Not a star, and has no real relevance to the film as a whole.

* Severine from \'\'Film/Skyfall\'\' is made out to be the film\'s female lead, complete with a TragicBackstory and motivation to kill the BigBad, only to be murdered after her one plot-relevant scene, as little more than an afterthought. You could take her out the picture completely and the only change would be Bond needing a different way to meet the villain.

It\'s like someone doesn\'t know that half of the Bond girls in the franchise are predisposed to DeathBySex[=/=]DisposableWoman. It\'s about as common as you can get here. Nor is this a \"name\" actor.

* \'\'Film/ThePhantomMenace\'\' -- aside from Darth Maul, Qui Gon is the only major character to die in the first film of the prequel trilogy.Though he had a voice cameo in \'\'Film/AttackOfTheClones\'\', and he would have appeared in a discarded scene in \'\'Film/RevengeOfTheSith\'\'.

Not an example. Qui-Gon dies at the end of the film -- this trope has to show someone dying within the first half of the film (or less) to really count. No weaseling out of it by changing the trope definition.

* In recent re-releases of \'\'Literature/Carrie\'\', Creator/JohnTravolta gets top billing even though he plays a minor character, the AlphaBitch\'s boyfriend. Travolta\'s car bursts into flames, killing his character.

Travolta\'s character \'\'wasn\'t\'\' a star at the time the film was made, and even so, his character and his girlfriend survive until the penultimate scene. Not really an example.

* Creator/ChristopherLee in \'\'Film/HoneymoonAcademy\'\'.
* Creator/OliviaWilde in \'\'Film/InTime\'\'.

These need more elaboration. I know Wilde\'s role was a PosthumousCharacter, but I don\'t know if that factors in enough.
