I saw this show in middle school, so it's likely from the 90's. I think it was on HBO or another premium cable channel. It's a documentary type of show as it's about real life people.
It's about a disabled Asian boy. There's issues with his legs so at a young age, he can only roll around the house. He is being raised by a single mother in the US. His best friend is a African-American boy. They seem to be really close.
The show is time lapsed (similar to the Up Series). So it shows them at elementary age (about 7 years old or so) and also later on (I think they're like 15 or so). Later on, the disabled Asian boy and the African-American boy are still best friends. The African-American boy pushes the Asian boy around in a wheelchair.
The show format is documentary style (as stated above) as there are often one-on-one question and answer sessions shown and general following around of the individuals in the their day-to-day lives.
