Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883!
This is a short story I read in an English class. A young man gets his first job in a store, I think a shoe store. As he works, he imagines the sounds made by the cash register are forming words. "Hel-lo all you hap-py pee-pull..." that sort of thing.
At the end of the story, he gets fired. I forget the reason why, but I remember it says the cash register says "pee-pull," which I guess is supposed to represent the sound of the drawer opening.
Anyone know what this story might be?
