I don't think it was open knowledge at the time about the ghost-writing; audiences wouldn't be expected to know that.

Hypocritical Humor and Undermined By Reality don't quite seem to fit...
In the pilot episode of the Ellery Queen tv series, a character tries to purchase the rights to adapt Ellery's casebook for his own radio show. Ellery is offended, as doing so would turn him into a ghost writer.
However, about half the books written under the Queen byline (including the book on which the episode was based) were ghost written by others.
