Light Side - Anok Compound / Aentolin Academy

Rine landed with a pained grunt on the training mat, his scimitar dissipating into a shower of white sparks.

His father stood a short distance away, frowning at him, having already dissipated his own weapon after seeing his son's collapse.

"As good as it is for you to create your own style, Rine, it is flawed. You were so focused on landing hits that you didn't raise any shields. Are you certain you are ready to attend-"

"I am certain, Father" he coldly interrupted.

The elder blinked, his frown deepening.

"In that case, you should be going now. But be warned, if these… amateurish, issues are not fixed during your attendance, and you suffer later on, it would be out of your own foolishness."

Biting back a harsh retort, Rine instead gave Ekan a stiff nod, walking out of the training room. He gave another short nod of acknowledgement to the branch member guarding the door, before continuing down the hallways towards the exit.

Deep down, Rine knew Ekan was right. Despite the elder Kaydenite's bluntness, he was only trying to make sure Rine was prepared.

But there was a point where it was just too much. Yes, Rine's style had faults, but there were generals out there who couldn't even hold a sword back in their Academy days.

Sighing to himself, he pushed the door to the compound open, staring out at the city. Vines wrapped around the buildings, waterfalls cascaded through massive wheels, spilling onto the rooftops below. The floor was presumably down there too, but the distance was simply too far to see it.

Taking a breath of air, he walked over to a waiting hover-vehicle, a branch member dozing at the wheel.

Shaking his head good naturedly, he tapped on the glass with his knuckle, chuckling as the startled driver frantically struggled to open the door.

Thankfully, the driver managed to spare himself any more embarrassment, finally managing to open the door and apologizing profusely for his sleeping on the job. Rine simply waved him off, clambering into the vehicle and settling into his seat.

A small cloud of dust was kicked up as the vehicle took off, rocketing in between the buildings and weaving and dodging the other hover-vehicles in the sky.

As he looked out, he could see some other House vehicles maneuvering in much the same way, all eager to get to the Academy.

Thankfully, they didn't have to wait much longer, for as they turned the next corner they were treated to that very building.

It was beautiful. For once, he had to grudgingly admit that the Tume's extravagant decorations really worked here. It was a vast monolith, even in comparison to the tall buildings next to it, a shining brass in colour, reflecting the beating sun into the other buildings surrounding it, giving it a radiant appearance. A large hole was carved through the topmost section of the building, allowing vehicles to take a shortcut through. Several landing platforms jutted out from the sides, some already filled with similar hover-vehicles.

The driver circled around like a hawk, trying to find a vacant spot to land on. Upon finding one, he gently drifted the vehicle down, extending the landing struts, cushioning any impact the landing may have.

Nodding to the driver in thanks, he stepped out, stretching slightly from the cramped space in the vehicle. Deciding to take a seat on a nearby bench, he watched as some of the other students got out of their vehicles. He took particular note of the daughter of the main Seng family, having heard of her condition from his parents beforehand. He was quite surprised to see she had actually chosen to attend, but he decided it best to not tell her that, judging from the determined expression on her face. She was dangerous if pushed, he could tell by the way she held herself.

They had a little while until they were due to go in, judging by the still closed gates, so it was a prime time to practice or talk. Rine decided to simply speak only when spoken to, preferring to take in the sights.

Dark Side - Wave Breaker Temporary Camp

It was rather dark around the Wave Breaker camp. But that wasn’t a surprise, not in the least. It was always dark here; cold and black and miserable. The only light came from the torches- flashlights, that is, not the flaming kind- that any Darksider with a lick of sense carried. After all, things lurked in the dark; bandits, creatures, and often worse things. There was safety in numbers, and safety in light; both were present here.

Sitting around the caravan that had stopped temporarily for maintenance was a collection of heavily armed scoundrels, bandits, thugs, and other unsavory men and women. Every person in the camp was armed to the teeth, and anything with sense would leave them alone; after all, these were the kind of Kaydenites that slaughtered monsters and robbed Lightsiders for fun.

That, however, didn’t mean that they didn’t know how to have fun.

“Hey, Jok’a,” a thin man named S’ils called out jovially, a grin on his face. He was lounging against the steel hull of the hover caravan- a vehicle armored to take on almost anything. Big and bulky, it may not have been fast, but it was strong. “Any chance you can cobble together one of those Hoverbikes for me?”

A tough-looking woman next to him laughed. “Yeah, I’m sure he’ll make a sarcastic twig like you one. Right after hell freezes over.” One might have mistaken the two of them for an average pair of friends… if one was ignorant of the fact that they were trained killers. She punched the thin Kaydenite in the shoulder, who snickered.

“Hey,” S’ils countered, faking an injured look, “that really hurts, you know. Jok’a and me are buddies, you know?” He shot the bigger Kaydenite a grin. “I mean, I know we haven’t really talked much, but we both like making things blow up, eh? I guess you could say… we have an explosive personality.”

His companion didn’t have anything to say to that, and just burst out laughing.

On the outskirts of the camp, a man dressed in black and grey armor and a trenchcoat- no, really, a trenchcoat- chatted with Lokh. Well, chatted wasn’t quite the right word; ‘pawned off his stolen goods’ was probably a better term for it.

“Ok, so look. Last raid was great; slipped in, slipped out, got some great stuff. I know you don’t buy from just anyone,” he said, his voice quick and low, “but look at this.” Opening his coat, he pulled out a medium-sized black blowtorch, complete with a fuel canister. “Made from Darksteel. Good for getting in and out of sealed places. You can even seal doors yourself.” With a grin, he set it down and pulled out something else.

“Or, how about this? I know you don’t like weapons that much, but this one is a beauty.” The man pulled out what looked like a pistol with a silencer. “I know this looks average, but you power it with some Hardlight, it can pierce almost anything. Nearly silent, too. Not like most silenced weapons. This one is great. Whadda ya say? Three hundred credits for both. A real steal.”

A'dni's goal at the moment was to not get caught staring.

Ideally, she wouldn't be caught staring because she wouldn't be staring, but it was different up close. She'd never been in a personal hover-vehicle before, and it was so much better than public transportation, especially without the elderly men masturbating in the corners.

She should've been used to it after a lifetime of watching her mother work for these people. And it wasn't like she was under any illusions about this being hers; it was the Seng house's. She was only tolerated so long as she was useful.

The beautiful architecture and fine clothes couldn't change that.

It was disgusting, A'dni reminded herself, because anything that these people were wearing could probably pay for a year's worth of medicine for her mother. She looked over her...classmates, she supposed, with barely hidden disdain. So plump, so pampered, probably never cooked or sewed or scrimped or saved a day in their liv -

She stopped when she noticed one classmate. A girl her age, with short, dirty blonde hair, and a very familiar face. Smaller than average eyes, larger than average nose, thin lips, high cheekbones -

They looked alike, A'dni realized with a start. Not identical, but similar enough to maybe pass for sisters.

The thought embarrassed her. She couldn't say why.

A'dni crossed her arms and focused on the door. The faculty would have to let them in sooner or later, and this could finally end.

Jok'a Gast was finishing up maintenance on the Hover Caravan when he heard his name called. Closing the hood of the vehicle, he stood up and walked around the hull to where S'ils had called him.

"Sure, if ya don't mind waiting a few months." The mechanic quipped as he wiped his hands on a oily rag. "It's quicker to steal a bike in a raid and let me tune it up."

Jok'a narrowed his eyes and stared at S'ils in curiosity. "Why do ya want one anyway? Caravans too cramped?"

"Remember your purpose, son. You're making history."

Lari Tehk said to her "child", or rather, to her creation with not even a slightest hint of kindness or love, as if it was strictly business. Xake was part of Tehk family, yet he did not feel he was part of it. Artificial Kaydenite decided it was for the best, as when the moment of betrayal arrived, he would act with machine-like efficiency.

After words of Lari, no words of cheer came from his family. Every members of his family was aware of his purpose and design, yet not even a single one of them seemed to have understood him fully. "Everyone is afraid of the unknown... especially House of Tehk." He thought to himself.

Xake found himself in front of the famous Aentolin Academy, another symbol of vast richness of Tume. No emotion. Not even a sense of wonder. It was just another building for Xake Tehk. He had no care for others or how others saw him. "Exposure of my origin is extremely disadvantageous to the mission. Should avoid that."

Tehk found a place to sit and took out a storage of data to read "The concept of Free Will" by Ulin Seng. The general idea he got from the book was that there were not such things such as fate or pre-determined purposes, only what individual makes and creates. No matter how much he thought of it, Xake concluded that he was an exception to this.

"After all, I'm only a puppet."

Finally, the doors began to open, the hydraulics hissing like a snake, if a snake had incredible lung capacity, and didn't sound like a snake at all.

It appeared to be pitch black inside, but there was a glimmer of white light at the end...

The first brave soul to venture in was a young Fa'la Keed, who was quickly enveloped into the darkness.

A tense moment, then a scream.

Rine and Kyxe immediately generated their signature weapons, cautiously making their way in. A few other miscellaneous students generated their weapons too, following with baited breath.

It was somehow even darker inside, the soft glow of their constructs providing only minimal comfort.

They were upon the source of the light, a glowing spot embedded in the wall. It seemed to be getting bigger...

"GET DOWN!" someone yelled, causing Rine to grab the two nearest people and shove both them and himself to the floor, a massive spike of Hardlight smashing through the steel plating, missing their heads by mere centimetres.

One of them happened to be Kyxe, who looked to be a mixture of mostly irritated and very slightly grateful.

The spike, which had the same roughness and natural formation to that of a stalactite, retreated back into the wall, the sound of dissipating Hardlight following it.

Another brief moment of silence, and then around a dozen of the following students ran off the way they came, screaming like banshees.

A barely discernible figure gazed at the remaining students, before promptly vanishing.

As the door to the Academy opened, Xake saw a void with only a glimpse of light in it. Putting aside his data storage aside, he went in along with others. Then, a sound of a scream echoed. Xake generated his Versatile Firearm in an instant and pointed at the source of the cry, holding his breath for a steady aim. Created saw a light getting closer to the group.

As soon as someone said "Get down!", he avoided the projectile, lying on a floor. Xake still pointed his gun at the same direction. Soon, most future cadets started to run away, only a handful of them remaining. Getting up, Xake glanced at the remaining Kaydenites. They were unharmed.

The creation of science saw a figure up ahead, only for it to disappear into nothingness.

"What was it? A terrorist attack? But not a single person had died and it would have been more grandiose in scale... A simple test of our skill? Possibly. Still, even if it is a test, I should not let my guard down."

Xake changed VF's mode to sniper rifle with a simple touch at the side of the gun and aimed it front. To prepare for a potential attack, he charged his shot as Hardlight inside the weapon swirled to become something akin to a plasma.

Whether it was an attack on school, a test or something else, it did not matter to Xake.

L'okh almost chuckled at the offer. Trenchcoat (even after all this time, she had yet to hear anyone refer to the man by name) was always trying to pawn off whatever crap he picked up on his unsuspecting comrades. It was rarely as good as advertised. Still, she decided to humor him.

"Hard pass on the blowtorch. Far too noisy, and sealed rooms are rarely worth it. People tend to keep their valuables in places they can actually get into. As for the pistol... throw it here, let me test that silencer myself."

L'okh was reluctant to hand over any of her hard earned credits, but a near-silent pistol could be quite useful, if only to keep up appearances. She trusted her lethal aim with a lockpick over a clumsy gun any day.

It was a test. It had to be. There was no way anyone would attack on the first day like this, not when they could just take hostages and make their demands.

So A'dni remained inside, a circular shield resting on each arm, faintly glowing gray in the darkness.

The classmates who were too stupid to escape when they could (which included her, she supposed) were only faintly visible by their Hardlight constructs. Most noticeably was a boy carrying some sort of gun, the light of which cast shadows over his completely neutral expression.

A'dni decided to speak up. She didn't feel like testing how bulletproof her shields were right now.

She approached him cautiously, hands up to show she wasn't a threat.

"Hello. I'm A'dni. A'dni Seng. I'm also a student here."

After an awkward silent moment, she added "There's safety in numbers, or so I've heard."

Kyxe still had her knives out, scanning the thick darkness surrounding them. She kept shooting quick glances at the other students, making sure they hadn't been dragged off in typical horror movie fashion.

Or more specifically, she shot glances at A'dni.

She seemed... familiar. She just couldn't put her finger on what exactly it was.

And then she spoke her name to that boy, causing Kyxe to snap her head around in shock, briefly forgetting the situation.

"Y-You're a Seng?" she whispered.

Meanwhile, Rine was flicking his head around, like a bird, hunting for that strange figure.

Come on, show your face. If this is a test, you're taking your damned time...

S’ils nodded. “Yeah. I know we’re a big old family and stuff, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to feel the wind on my face. Besides, is there any real reason not to have a Hover Bike?” He pointed out with a grin. His companion gave him a look, and he relented sheepishly. “Well, besides the possibility that I’ll crash and burn. But still, it’s worth the risk, no?”

Trenchcoat shrugged and handed over the pistol. “Here you go, L’okh. One hundred fifty credits for it- I could easily get two-hundred anywhere else, but you’re a real valued customer,” he said smoothly. Indeed, the pistol actually appeared to be a good model; while it wasn’t exactly a heavy-duty Hardlight assault rifle, it could do some real damage.

The woman next to S’ils looked up. “You heard from Tr’ev?” He asked Jok’a. “He’s on sentry duty. He was supposed to report back in. He’s so damn lazy,” he muttered.

Kyxe managed to recover from the shock, outstretching her hand to shake.

"I'm Kyxe Seng, daughter of Ji'la and Van'l Seng. Nice to meet you, I didn't expect to see a relative here."

From her words, it could be assumed that she was unaware of the difficulties the branch members suffered, but the look of sympathy in her eyes spoke otherwise. She didn't see her as a servant, but family.

"Hate to ruin the moment, but you two may want to get ready" called out Rine.

The hooded figure had appeared again, and was standing a close distance away, once again difficult to discern in the darkness.

However, instead of moving to attack, he started clapping.

"Well done. You all stood your ground in the face of the enemy even though you had plenty of opportunities to leave."

The figure pulled down his hood, revealing a man with graying hair and a slightly wrinkled face, looking at them with a spark of mischief.

"Apologies for tricking you, but we have to take precautions. We don't want runaways and cowards who retreat at the slightest hint of opposition. We need warriors. So far, colour me impressed."

The mischievous glint in his eyes seemed to grow, if that were even possible.

"For now. I am Akir Tume, the headmaster, if you will. Now, lights!"

He clapped his hands, the lights flickering on obediently, revealing that the corridor expanded into a large hall behind him. It was primarily a polished white, the walls decorated with extravagant banners, eight large pillars extending up to the ceiling.

Instead of appearing proud, he grimaced at the decorations.

"I'm sorry for the... extravagance. The House of Tume likes to flaunt their money, as you can clearly tell. So, does anyone have any questions?"

L'okh examined the silencer on her newly acquired pistol. Damn, this was actually a quality model. Minimal wear-and-tear... probably stolen from some undertrained schmuck fresh from the light side. For once, Trenchcoat wasn't exaggerating. Which meant she actually had to pay him. Shit.

Reluctantly, L'okh forked over the 150 credits, thankful that at the very least, Trenchcoat didn't seem to know the value of his find. A pistol like this would run 500 credits minimum on the light side. Best not let him know that, though.

"Pleasure doing business with you."

Idly pocketing the pistol, L'okh overheard another bandit tell the firecracker that their scout hadn't come back. Tr'ev was a lazy bum, so he was most likely just taking a nap somewhere, but still, better safe than sorry.

L'okh moved closer to the caravan in case she needed to take cover suddenly.

Jok'a rolled his eyes in mock exasperation. "Says the one who ain't gonna have to fix the bike an' drag your ass out of the fire." He rumbled. "Ah guess Ah could give ya a few tips once ya nab a bike."

The mechanic shook his head in reply to the other bandit's question. "Not a word... guess Ah'll go wake him up." He grunted, and began walking towards Tr'ev's position. From the corner of his eye, Jok'a spotted L'okh near the caravan and gave a lazy wave in greeting. They hadn't really interacted much since he was..."recruited", as she didn't have much need for a mechanic or missiles.

A'dni didn't know to respond at first. Coolness, she could deal with. Even scorn. Sincerity was new. Not necessarily bad, though.

Unless she didn't know why A'dni was here..

A'dni shook Kyxe's hand. Her expression remained neutral, less for any particular reason and more because that was just her face. No sense in making enemies this soon.

"A pleasure to meet you."

Then the headmaster showed up, and the lights came on, revealing the most pristine room A'dni had ever seen (the cleaners must have worked overtime). The headmaster asked for questions.

"You weren't even going to test our combat skills?" A'dni asked. "Surely the will to fight isn't the same as being able to fight."

Wave-Breaker Camp Outskirts

As Jok’a neared the outskirts of the camp, the shadows of the night seemed to deepen, if only for a moment. There was no sign of Tr'ev, which was not a good sign. No one that had any common sense wandered away from people with guns and light that were your allies in the Darkside. For a sentry to not be in sight of the caravan was a sure sign that they were either undertaking a mission of extreme importance, or that something had happened.

The crimson blood stains on the ground, illuminated by the lights of the flashlight Jok’a carried, were a much more concrete sign.

Suddenly, a figure stumbled out of the darkness. Before the Kaydenite hover-biker had time to materialize a weapon, it quickly became apparent that the gasping figure was Tr’ev. Although the long, deep claw marks across his face served to disfigure what once may have been a handsome Kaydenite, his manner of dress and the Wave Breaker uniform he wore identified him as a friend.

Blood streaming down his face, the man fell to his knees, quick enough that Jok’a couldn’t catch him, even if he’d wanted too. “Beast-” He managed to spit out, holding a hand to a gaping hole in his stomach, his entrails on plain display. He never finished his sentence, as a huge white claw wrapped around his throat, and he was dragged screaming and choking into the dark once again.

There was a wet crunch, and the slurp of something drinking, and then there was silence.

Suddenly, a pair of dark black eyes, blacker than any night could ever hope to paint, stared into Jo’ka’s own. A pair of very, very familiar eyes. Ones that had no doubt haunted his dreams since that fateful day. That day when a very familiar thing had torn apart his mother and disemboweled his father. The thing that had almost slaughtered him, that hadn’t found him only because he’d been masked in the blood and fear of his family.

The severed head of what once had been a Kaydenite rolled out towards his feet, the top-half having been chewed on like an apple. A huge figure stepped out after it, looming far above Jo’ka. It had to be at least eight-feet tall, and it was covered in ice-white fur, sharp and prickly. Its eyes, bestial and cunning, observed the Kaydenite in front of it. It looked at its claws, sharp things that looked like they could cut through flesh and bone like butter- and they just had, it seemed.

Jaws dripping with blood and gore, the beast that was Copy 2 stepped past Jo’ka, tail stiff and motionless as the massive behemoth started to tromp towards the camp, its heavy footfalls producing loud thuds.

And then all-hell broke loose.

The moment Jok'a set his gaze upon Copy Two, it was like the world fell away, leaving just him and the...monster that destroyed his old life all those decades ago. He tried to speak, but his voice refused to work due to the sheer terror coursing through him.

"...!!...!!!"

After what seemed like an hour, Copy 2 moved past him and towards the camp before the biker collapsed on his hands and knees, gasping for air. Fuck...fuck! Why is he here!?

...oh fuck, he's heading to the camp! Despite his beef with the Wave Breakers' blackmailing him into theiry employ, Jok'a wouldn't wish Copy 2 on his worst enemy...or anyone, really.

Even with the adrenaline rush of terror, Jok'a could only manage to stumble himself the camp. But as screams started to fill the air, he knew he was too late.

"That is very true, which is why we're going to do that now" Akir explained in response to A'dni's question. He gestured for them all to follow, leading them towards a corridor on the left hand side of the main hall.

"This corridor leads to the training rooms, the corridor on the opposite side leads to the medibay. Next floor up is the mess hall and the lounge, and the next floor up from that are the bathrooms and dormitories if you need them. It isn't mandatory to stay in the dorms, you may return to your compounds after today's lesson if you so wish" he explained, stopping at the door labelled 'Training Room 7'. It hissed open, somewhat less dramatically than the main entrance.

The training room was fairly expansive, about the size of a school gym. There were benches lining the side of the walls, along with emergency medical kits.

There was an unnerving feeling that they would need them.

He walked to the middle of the room, his veins and eyes starting to glow from the sheer amount of Hardlight he was channeling through them.

"Now, here's my proposal. You all will fight me, taking turns. I will analyze your skill, point out any faults or mistakes you make. If you manage to knock me down, I'll graduate the entire class. Who wants to go first?"

For once in his life, Rine let out an audible gulp.

Dark Side - Wave Breaker Caravan

As someone who was, by necessity, well informed on all of the dark side's major factions, L'okh recognized Copy 2 on sight. She also recognized that attempting to fight the bestial behemoth was tantamount to suicide.

So, prioritizing saving her own skin over things like honor and loyalty, L'okh quickly and silently entered the armored hover caravan, contorting her flexible body to hide in the weapons locker and jamming the locking mechanism from the inside.

This was almost certainly the safest place to wait out the attack slaughter.

Light Side - Aentolin Academy

The elder blinked in surprise at Xake's quick volunteer, then smiled warmly at him.

"Very well. I suggest the rest of you stand back."

With that, Akir placed his hands on the ground, causing a veinlike pattern of Hardlight to spread across the floor towards Xake. The 'veins' seemed to form into a glowing spot directly beneath Xake, brightening in intensity in the same way as when the group were in the corridor...

It was probably wise that he move out the way.

Darksider Wave-Breaker Caravan

Screams filled the air, mixing and churning as some were abruptly cut off, only to be replaced with the crunching of bones. The white beast moved with unthinkable speed, slaughtering anything that stood in his way. Ma'la ended up here and there, literally, blood splattering the dirt as her two halves dropped to the ground. Re'ln died screaming as his arm was torn from its socket, and tossed aside like trash.

Bullets, Hardlight or otherwise, seemed to bounce off the monster. Val’en shattered his longsword on the back of the beast, before a backhand sent his head spinning around the wrong way with a snap. The creature grabbed Ca’ln by the neck and squeezed, harder and harder before there was a pop, and then the unfortunate Kaydenite knew nothing.

Dropping the headless corpse, the beast turned its gaze towards the caravan. There was terror and fear all around it, but it smelled something else… cowardice. In a camp full of loyalty and camaraderie, even in the face of such a deadly assault, it was a sour smell that stood out.

Someone was hiding.

Jok’a managed to make it to the grisly remains of the first half of the camp as Copy 2 was stomping towards the hover-caravan. The gore that streaked the ground was almost unthinkable; it was like something out of a bad horror movie. But the smell and the squelch of his boots as he stepped on something best left to his imagination… everything was real. Very, very real.

Seizing the left door to the caravan, Copy 2 ripped it clean off, before tossing it to the side, and climbing inside. His heavy breathing and snuffling as he sniffed for the one who was hiding was very, very easy to hear from inside, say, a locker. Just as easy to smell was the blood dripping from his muzzle, or the strands of flesh still caught in his claws.

However, the creature left its back exposed to Jo'ka- the perfect time for a clean shot.

Probably the only easy chance to hit the monster he was going to get.

Dark Side

Jok'a fought the urge to gag as the overpowering smell of blood and guts hit him like a freighter, bringing back memories of his town's destruction at the claws of Roc'n's predator.

With a shudder, he tore his eyes from the sight of broken corpses strewn on the ground and focused on Copy 2 stomping towards the Caravan, his back facing the mechanic.

By now, the shock was wearing off, giving way to fury. His eyes glowed as crimson hardlight began pooling around him, shaping into three hardlight missiles.

With a mental nudge, Jok'a sent the missiles rocketing towards Copy 2's back.
