WE HAVE TRAILER!
Oh, I'm so excited. There's so much stuff to unpack here, and I'm loving how the levels look.
they're gonna find intelligent life up there on the moon/and the canterbury tales will shoot up to the top of the best-seller listI really like the plastic-ish texture of the characters. It translated to current-gen better than I expected.
I can't wait to explore the new hub.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).Looks like they stylized the game a bit better, I remember the screenshot of Raz on the Characters page from the concept art they showed of 2 had some issues with the Uncanny Valley.
I'm surprised how much it looks like the first game.
That's a good thing, the first one's aesthetic was A+.
This song needs more love. All very stop-motiony. Awesome.
Oh shit, I didn't know we had a thread for the sequel!
But yeah, that trailer looks great. They've spent the time since the announcement trailer to polish the look of the characters so that they're not in the Uncanny Valley any more, and the level concepts look great. It looks like they're really utilizing the improved tech to their advantage here.
I'm predicting that the Casino Park level seen in the trailer takes place in the mind of someone with serious gambling addiction. I'm glad to see some of the characters (especially Raz's family and Loboto) making a comeback as well. I wonder how messed up a level taking place inside his mind would be?

There was also a VR game set between Psychonauts 1 and 2 and I'm wondering if playing that is going to be required to understand what's happening in this.
If you're talking about Loboto, Rhombus of Ruin's final segment has you inside Loboto's mind. I think you even get a boss battle against him.
I can see them doing a small recap, but honestly, not much happened beyond revealing that the one who kidnapped Lily's dad was Loboto, under someone else's owners, and Raz and co. rescuing him and heading to HQ with a hidden Loboto boarding the plane.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).The guy on the table in the trailer I THINK is Lili's dad. So presumably the VR game is still canon and will be acknowledged in Psychonauts 2. I would assume, since VR is still taking off and I don't think many actually played it, that we'll get a recap of that chapter if not maybe play a condensed version as a tutorial level?
Huh. I've never checked Rhombus of Ruin out, but after looking at a playthrough all I can say is getting your child lobotomized because of their nascent psychic abilities is dark even for Psychonauts, something not helped by the eerily animated puppets.
So I guess that's not going to be something revisited in the sequel.
Psychonauts 2 First Gameplay Trailer.
Also, more importantly, Double Fine is Microsoft now
According to Schafer that won't affect any of the promises made during the crowdfunding campaign, so Psychonauts 2 won't suddenly become Xbox exclusive. However, becoming a part of a larger studio might hook Double Fine up with more resources, so from the standpoint of P2 alone this should be a good thing?
It might also mean if they ever make a third game, it will likely be Xbox-exclusive.
Latest blog update (November 5th, 2022).How many Microsoft games do you know of that don't release on PC?
Xbox exclusive meaning not on playstation.
It was some time late last year that I finished playing the first game. I enjoyed playing it, but kinda wish they'd have had a New Game+ type of thing instead of just taking you back to before you finish the final level when you go back to your save after completing it. Still definitely aiming to get the second game once I'm able to.

Let's hope it doesn't end up being December of next year.
Disgusted, but not surprisedEh, I kind of figured it'd end up being pushed back. Still, I'd rather it gets pushed back than have them go into crunch in order to get it out on the original planned release date, so...

I mean, you could say the exact same about any movie or book that has some similar Sequel Gap where the details don't quite add up.
Maybe they did realize they said 'We know who it is' at the end, but never intended to make a game out of it and, being put in a position to write a spin off using that as the jumping off point, writing with a mystery antagonist instead is simply more interesting? That's perfectly logical and rational.
Psychonauts is hardly the first to contradict their sequel hook in the subsequent sequel and it won't be the last. Its a reality of evolving ideas and especially if you never intend to actually follow up on said sequel hook when you wrote it.
