Since SMT V was announced, they have released four Persona spin-offs/related media and announced two others.
Like I won't get all "OMG Shin Megami Tensei is dead!" because frankly I don't really care, but it is clear that Persona is their main franchise now while SMT is considered the weird offshoot.

That is indeed funny.
At this point I'm more curious about SMTV than any Persona title if its a spin-off.
Like call me when we get a mainline game. 
To be fair, ATLUS somehow cranks out like 2-3 games every year, which isn't helping their fans become less spoiled.
I get the feeling that when SMTV comes out, the fans of SMT will rejoice at the expense of Persona fans.

The constant releases of games like on an assembly line doesn't not help with the quality.
Plus ya know devoting so much time & resources to irreverent spin-offs.

It's very ironic how the most successful game they ever released is a spin-off.
Both. Because it's not Nocturne of course.
Or how people who have gotten into RSJ don't like the changes when...most people hated the original alignment endings for being psychotic in their extremes!
And SMTIV did extremely well. Why it got a upgraded release turned sequel in IVA in the first place.

Mainline SMT has always had long wait time and then a short span between sequels on the same console.
It's just there's usually some Spinoffs in that time to whet the appetite. Which hasn't been the case since De Su 2 RB and the team that made it is gutted like a fish and cannibalized into other teams.

Yeah, it's not so much there's a lot of main games, but there used to be a good two to three spinoffs you could play while waiting for another game. It's the drought of any SMT spinoffs over the last decade that concerns me. Well, that and the resources that could go into them are more Persona, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

These spin-offs, do you mean the type that are lower-tiered games with their own cast and unique gimmick that can function perfectly as stand-alone titles inbteween the relatively AAA-tier games?

Yes. DDS, Raidou, De Su, Demikids, etc.
Spinoffs all playable to SMT and the like. Disappearing one by one. DDS makes sense as it was always one game that ended up 2, Demikids only stayed until Cozy left.
And as they stopped the Persona spinoffs took their place

To be fair on DDS, it also came out before Persona 3 really shook things up by making a lot of money...
It was a project of an outside Author who liked SMT. The Books are the promise they could tell the original story they planned before illness made things so bad Tadashi had to take over.
And we won't even get the last book.

Should also be noted a Warrors type game poll was actually done once on franchises. SMT managed to beat Persona and get into the Top Ten. Persona barely got into the twenties from what I heard.
Meanwhile P5 is getting the Warriors game. The irony.

It's worth pointing out that being more popular than mainline SMT was the impetus for Persona's creation in the first place.
I don't think tht's wrong, because the later games often ignore the early Persona games too.
It's a point where the fans aren't wrong, they just need to stop sucking their bottles and go take a nap and poop out their shittiness about it.
Like I even defended P3/5D because I hoped they still had a story and they well...don't.
But also think people need to understand Doi is one man and Kaneko is doing other shit instead of making designs. Including...overseeing demon models fpr P5. Which, uh, doesn't help.
