Interesting. Topic is certainly Hussie-ish, adapted for 2021. Honestly it was either something like this or like, Vtubers.

Oh cool, random jump in the thread while thinking about maaybe catching up on HS from where I left it off ways ago, and the mention of The Unofficial Collection is exactly what I'd need.

4 gigabytes download, whoah.

I am still plugging away at Homestuck! I am now at the point where You're in Doc Scratch's home, he gets into an altercation with Jack, and you then click through the clippings of his scrapbook that takes you to short little asides with the characters.

Firstly, I would like to (somewhat) apologize for my troll slander. While I still feel they come out of goddamn nowhere, I do appreciate them now. Karkat, Nepeta, Tavros, Feferi, and Terezi are just really likeable characters (the way Karkat reveals himself to be a incredibly likeable and sympathetic team leader despite first coming off as a truly unlikeable angry asshole...and uh, staying like that is really damn good. The few moments where he drops his harshness are just delightful). I think Kanaya, Sollux and Equius are also pretty good. I even think Vriska is...well, not as awful as I remember.

Okay she's pretty bad. But not irredeemably awful.

She still fucking crippled Tavros for literally no reason (not, her bullshit classist culture doesn't excuse it), though. Her ancestor Mindfang was slick as hellllll though, damn she fine

I think I'm right at the part where we get introduced to all those alternate universe versions of the humans, so that's gonna be fun! The concept of Sburb is fascinating—enough that I don't ask "who the hell made this game", though I hope that's a thing that's answered (or perhaps not? Maybe it's better if Sburb is simply a facet of the universe, maintaining its mysterious nature). I really hope the ending isn't as bad as I've heard...

The story isn't really as confusing as people meme it to be (at least now). There's a lot of timey-wimey nonsense but honestly Hussie keeps things MOSTLY on track and easily readable? I wonder if the perception that HS is some impenetrable roller coaster you just hop on and fly along without really getting it fully is becuase a ton of this comic's audience were kids when they read it and they just had never seen something anywhere near as complex as this, because as a 25-year-old guy who's been around the block when it comes to dense narratives I'm honestly impressed at how good Hussie is at keeping everything together. Dude's a good plotter.

Well, Vriska did have a reason for crippling Tavros. What she lacked was a good reason. Both in that her motivation was evil and also not particularly sensible.

As for how Homestuck isn't as confusing as it's made out to be, I agree. I was reading it in my late teens and never had a hard time following things. Hussie is very good at making the whole thing work. Age was likely a factor, but I also think part of the perception may come from update readers, since it's easier to start forgetting or misremembering things when the reading is spread out over longer periods.

If I had to guess, though, I think it's that the directions the story goes in are sort of bonkers. Even if you can follow it easily enough, it can be pretty difficult to summarize it or explain it without making it out as a frenetic rollercoaster. Add in that Homestuck has zany shenanigans in it, and I can sort of see the comic getting outside impressions of "This sounds like an insane mess", and those being accepted by those in the fandom and spreading from there. I could be totally off the mark, though.

Mostly does better things now. Key word mostly. Writes things, but you'll never find them. Or you can ask.

My understanding is that SBURB is an Ontological Paradox just like it's players. The code is produced by itself via time loops

I generally could understand what was going on when I read it (though I was very deep into it, so I probably paid more attnetion than most). I will say though that the most convoluted aspect of the story in my opinion is still ahead of you.

I'm sorry, I started reading again today and is "Gamzee gave the human kids' universe cancer because Dave sent him ICP videos and he (Gamzee) thought they were so blasphemous to his personal spirituality he intentionally sabotaged Karkat and Kanaya's attempts to breed the Genesis Frog?" seriously just a plot revelation I just read.

I take it back: no wonder people call this comic batfuck crazy.

I don't think he sabotaged Karkat's attempt. IIRC he doesn't say he engineered for the universe to get cancer, he merely says he made the cancer terminal (by poisoning John's dreamscape with clowns, which led to Jack's rampage).

I have finally reached the point where we get introduced to the new kids.

Oh yeah, Cascade was pretty cool, but I think Descend is a cooler flash. Just personal preference, thanks to the music and how it really is the first moment you realize Homestuck isn't fucking around.

Anyway, I have only been introduced by name to Jake and Jane, but I already know the Rose-like girl is called Roxy and the Dave-like one is called Dirk. The way these characters are handled is interesting. They aren't direct copies of their four forebearers, but they aren't inversions either. Jake lives in a place like Jade's island, but he seems to be far more similar to John in terms of his likes and personality. However, Jane isn't similar to Jade other than being chipper (and John was too besides), so it's not a case of just swapping character traits. Yet, Jane is clearly supposed to be a playful riff on John's hatred for Betty Crocker since she's the heiress to a multi-billion baking goods company. And...apparently becomes a deranged fascist later? Judging from some of my friends' comments when they were talking about the ending a while back. How on...earth does that happen. I mean don't tell me. I want to learn for myself. Just...how.

Also Jade is apparently Jane's grandma. I have no idea how this works—I thought the Scratch reset the universe and the OG kids had to do some shit to somehow make it over there and not disappear along with everything else. Obviously don't tell me, but this is definitely one thing flying over my head. Actually are the new kids in the same rough time period as the OG ones? Like if this were the future and the OG kids existed as normal people that would make sense, but I'm pretty sure it's 2011 right now in the comic. Hm.

The existence of the Lusi on Jake's island is fucking with me. What's the reason for that, I wonder.

Roxy on the other hand isn't like any of the old kids, though her alcoholism is both worrying (she's like...15 if she's the same age as Jake and Jane) and clearly a riff on Rose's mom's drinking habits. Dirk has spoken once at the point I'm at. Seems to be a lot more serious than Dave. I like Dave better, but to be honest, no one can compare to Dave. Or Rose for that matter.

What I find very interesting is that the new kids have been "trolled" by people who are clearly trolls, but they one as of now is nice. That's gonna be interesting to learn out. Is this one troll an anomoly? Are the trolls of this universe nicer? Are they just a playful inversion of Karkat (they both type in silver).

Oh and fuck, I forgot about the long story before all this where Doc Scratch tells you about the ancestors of the 12 trolls. That was interesting, but I wonder how much it ties into the plot. Also adult trolls have absurdly huge horns jesus

I loved the early bits of Homestuck, so the idea of watching the four new kids stumble through the beginnings of Sburb sounds great...

...but I'm expecting Hussie to pull some crazy shit on us and derail the plot from just being a rehash of HS's early acts. I don't know what's gonna happen next, but I'm excited to learn.

Man, I bet for those of you who followed the comic as it was being made, Cascade and the sudden smash switch to the new four kids must have been NUTS. I bet people were losing their goddamn minds. Almost makes me feel bad I was spoiled about their existence early.

The Cascade release hype was so intense that it crashed Newgrounds (the initial hosting site), the main MSPA site, and semi-crashed Megaupload after Hussie uploaded it there as an emergency measure.

I followed the series from day one since I likewise followed Problem Sleuth. It was a roller coaster. With agonizing waits punctuated by sudden burst of movement. You could go a week or two with no updates or sometimes you'd get forty updates in one day.
