Yeah, the whole "Scrambled" arc was fun, but the ending cinched it. Damn.

My bad about not looking harder for an existing Archie Sonic thread. I'm pumped about Silver and the secret Freedom Fighters story. ^^

So what are the odds those "instructions" Mogul left Silver for getting back to his own time turn out to be completely bogus? Like 99-1?

The 1% being inclusive of the possibility Mogul really has reformed, but wants Silver stranded in the past for some well-intentioned reason Silver probably will not like.

[up]

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest bit if Mammoth Mogul stranded Silver in the past on purpose.

*bump* Over at the Sonic games thread, we were discussing Sally's redesign, what do you guys think about it?

  • Ahem+ Quoting Kostya here to answer him;

"It's been pretty static for the...17ish years? Changing it now is just silly."

That's the point of the change, really; her design has been static for nearly 20 years, and it just looks more and more outdated as more characters are integrated into the Sega style. This change was pretty much inevitable.

It was bound to happen.

[up]Why though? Nobody else has really had a design update except Sonic and Tails and that was over 150 issues ago.

[up] And Amy, and the Chaotix, and Bunnie, and Rotor, and all the incidental characters, and pretty much the vast majority of the cast. Saying only Sonic and Tails have changed is...not right.

It was bound to happen.

One thing I've always wondered since I have trouble finding trades of Archie Sonic, is how is it in general compared to the games canon? How are the quality of stories, and the characterization in comparison to the games?

@vedjf: Not really. Archie never kept Sally's design consistant. Spaz and Axer made her a creepy humanoid while Yardley turned her into a transexual Tails. Sonic has arguably gone through less alterations through his various medias than her in one.

This new design is basically just Yardley's with pants.

I like it, it meshes better with the rest of the comics.

First time I check back in like months, and I now discover there is a Mecha Sally. Sigh. I'm starting to hate comics.

I can't seem to find anything on the internet that compares the Sonic games to the Archie continuity. Is there anyone who can give me a pretty good comparison of the two continuities? And if it's not possible, how come?

[up]Weeeeell... it's kind of complicated. The first year — or even more — of the comic was more comparable to the games, in the sense that there was little real emphasis on the plot, and that crazy hijinks and comedy (or, IMO, attempts at comedy...) were the fair of the day. But slowly, the Cerebus Syndrome began to roll in, and by the time issue 50 rolled around, (arguably even before then,) the comic and the games had become entirely different beasts. Whereas the games up to Sonic Adventure were nearly devoid of any real plot or characterization, the comic put a lot more detail and work into it's story, including giving Sonic a nice supporting cast beyond that of Tails&Knuckles. Sally the Squirrl, Antoine the Fox, Bunny Rabot, (self-explanatory,) Rotor the Walrus, and Sonic's Uncle Chuck all had their own roles to play.

The biggest change though was probably in Robotnik, and his effects in the world. Instead of trapping critters in robots, like in the games, he robotized the citizens of the kingdom of Mobius, which also had the effect of taking away their free will. Those who were able to get away, such as Sonic&pals, formed various resistance movements to end Robotnik's reign of terror, with Sonic and the gang holing up in Knothole Village.

As for Robotnik, whereas in the game's he something of a joke, in the comic, well, he started out as a joke there too, but eventually... he became downright menacing, in both appearance, personality, and actions. Unlike his game counterpart, this Robotnik was a monster, and a legitimate threat, to the point where he even nearly won in Endgame. In Issue 50 though, he gets killed off, and later is replaced with a new Robotnik, but I haven't gotten to the new Robotnik in my readings yet.

So, yeah, it's pretty different. (And don't get me started on Knuckles...)

[up]Wait, but both Archie Sonic and the Sega continuity underwent Cerebus Syndrome. What makes both of them different from that point?

[up]Don't know for sure. I haven't read much past that point yet.tongue That said, there's still a lot of stuff that the games don't have. At the top of my head; a crapload of characters not in the games, Knuckle's entire series, other villains such as Mammoth Mongul and Snivly, the Chaotix not getting Put on a Bus until Sonic Heroes, and a crapload of other things. They do have stuff from the later games, but when doing their adaptions, they either still try to fit it into their ongoing comic-only plotlines and character development, or they just put the adaption into a different continuity all together.

Other then that, you'll just have to ask someone else.tongue

[up]I just sure hope someone would compare and contrast both continuities. My perception of the Archie continuity from what little I know is that it's an Adaptation Expansion of both SatAM and the games, just with a lot of original content thrown in. I mean, there has to be some reason this continuity is almost as popular as the games.

[up]...It's not really an Adapation Expansion, at least not in the way you're thinking of. They have Sat AM characters, true, but the actual plots the comics have are very different from those of Sat AM. It's more like the two started out with similar ideas, but quickly diverged into their own territory.
