I prefer Look Ma, I Am on TV! because it gives more context.
Fight smart, not fair.I dont know I think they are related but not 100% the same trope Hi, Mom! is more of the fact that the person is put on the spot with something like "anything you want to say?" while nervous and says Hi, Mom!
The other trope is an Attention getter and usually does it without even being asked.
Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Looks like Hi, Mom! is a stock phrase, whereas Look Ma, I Am on TV! is about the general "people doing Shout Outs while being broadcast". Hi, Mom! seems fine as is, but Look Ma, I Am on TV! is terrible. It doesn't seem to have gone through YKTTW; needs a better name, better description, and more examples.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Funny thing is, Look Ma, I Am on TV! is also indexed on Stock Phrases. I still think they're close enough to merge.
^^YKTTW's sometimes get deleted from discussion pages over time. I've launched a few tropes myself from YKTTW that have mysteriously lost their links to their YKTTW's.
Look Ma, I Am on TV! does have very few wicks though.

I don't get how you think these are merge-able the only thing they really have in common is that there a camera really.
One is about shyness and the other is about attention getting.
Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Where is shyness mentioned in either description?
^ Yep, one of them is pure neutral "this is a thing people say," the other one is more "fame is fleeting and many people waste it."
Searching for plausible mechanisms.Well normally Hi, Mom! phrase is used in that way (someone put on the spot to say something to the camera and that's the common phrase they use), the trope I thought would of covered it but nvm I am lazy in reading.
Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!
I think Hi, Mom! and Look Ma, I Am on TV! are much too similar that we should have both tropes. (They share one example at present, from Family Guy.) Funny thing is, though the latter trope was created without benefit of YKTTW, it seems to have the better name and better description.
