On a final note, I'd say the second season was really lackluster as an adaptation in comparison to the first one, but still watchable. The novels were much more enjoyable and well-developed, so in general I'd recommend them to everyone.

[up] And I have to agree. Read the novels, note the context. Random Curiousity's post on the finale decries the lack of romantic resolution in a way that seems to highlight the disconnect at ending, pointing pretty clearly to Executive Meddling.

On a related note, There's No Way My Black Haired Little Sister is This Cute was quite a melancholy short story.

Well only if you're familiar with the series. It's just what if Kirino and Kyousuke were normal? Answer: Nothing at all, ever.

[up][up] Still, if the gist of what happens in the novels is what was shown in the anime, I can't say I'd be particularly motivated to read the novels.

[up]I'd still recommend that you read through them. The differences are more than superficial, and practically all aspects of the story are better-developed and executed than the anime. I mean, I actually cringed at some points in the last few episodes and it felt hollow at some points, but I felt nothing of the sort while reading through the novels.

I suppose part of that could be due to the format and how I didn't have to hear some of the most ridiculous lines in there, but I honestly think the novels are more genuine and believable.

Still, I could understand why you'd be dis-motivated to read them.

There are many random events and character interactions that are simply left out of the anime, and even the lack of narration is a significant loss.

Ending aside, I felt that the random events and character interactions made for some of the best moments (Ayase meeting Kuroneko is still one of my favourites, and they seem to develop an "interesting" relationship afterwards) that's why I decided to read the novels.

[up] The problem is that (as far as I can tell) it doesen't change the underlying story, just gives it more detail.

Well that's only a problem if you view the ending as fundamentally and retroactively affecting your enjoyment of everything that came before.

And part of my point is that the sideplots I'm referring to are extraneous to the main plot - fun un/semi-related asides - unlike the anime where any aside was trimmed for time.

I think most people already know whether they want to read the novels. There's certainly reasons not to. If Nano Desu ever completes their translations I'd personally re-read all the post season 1 stuff because Nano Desu's text is much richer.

[up] That's true. I was trying to convince myself to take a peek at the novels, but ultimately I just don't care about the characters enough to want to read more about them.

I read the manga and watched a bit of the anime. But the light novel was different.

Kirino wasn't bitchy but shy, the older brother was more caring, Manami's sweeter there. The UST there is more subtle and teased than blatantly shown, too.

[up] I like the light novels. The anime has a great soundtrack though. If I were to re-read I'd probably do it while listening to the soundtrack and comparing anime scenes as I go.

Since this thread has bumped, I'll mention the VN-like specials

  1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wI7tspp4EQY and
  2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAS5ooTbYyo
were pretty fun. This close to having Sakurai animated, but at least she's voiced and in colour. She is such a wacky character.

Unfortunately the BD specials I'm really waiting for have yet to be subbed.

Oh yeah, and it sounds like an art book is going to be released with another short story. I'm not sure if that would be translated though.

Here's a Crunchyroll link: http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2014/06/23-1/oreimo-art-book-promises-after-story

I know that Baka Tsuki had a translated version of an epilogue to one of the PSP routes, just I don't know which girl it's about.

Did any others try that game?

[up] I have only watched parts of the VN. If only I could download the whole thing I might have read through it. I have an irrational dislike of incomplete patches.

"An Ending's continuation" on Baka-Tsuki appears to be deliberately vague about who the wife is, but could be Kuroneko or Kanako. Probably Ruri.

I actually thought it was Ayase at first, and had some others surprise me with the Kanako guess too.

I've got some translation patches bookmarked I think, but I haven't gone yet to try it out.

I actually bought myself a copy of the second game. Granted I can't read Japanese so I don't understand the story or anything but it is still pretty nice to have.

I prefer to buy something I can actually enjoy. Like the soundtrack.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to have been one released for S2.

Well, I mean, OP and ED singles, but that's not really what I'm after.

And it looks like there's finally an official release with subtitles, so we've finally got all the animated commentaries for season 2 subbed, and out in various places if you know where to look.

It's a shame that there was almost no actual commentary this time but I did like like how they deliberately gave screentime to characters who missed out in the second season.

I am disappointed that Ayase only made a very brief cameo though.

But hey the line where they're playing an MMO is actually pretty cool.

I also liked how they wrapped it up nicely without saying a final goodbye. Perhaps a final bow before the curtain call may have been nice? I guess the point is that's just not how they roll. The series may be over, but it's not gone and the story goes on.

So I binge watched this a while back than put it on hold two episodes to go as the upcoming ending was just too painful/annoying. Now having finally watched them it was probably the best ending we could've gotten based on season 2, but it still hurts to watch.

In hindsight, the first season with the original, televised ending was almost perfect for what I wanted of this series, having estranged siblings rebuilding their relationship, rather than going for the incest route. I'm not sorry I watched the rest of the series, but it was a bittersweet pleasure.

That's kind of it, really. Good problematic sibling dynamics are very rare, I find, and they did do that rather well for the most part.
