Type-Moon: Fate/stay night, Tsukihime, and Kara no Kyoukai discussion

Actually, those Type-Moon fan polls have a really limited demographic. The people who answer them aren't the broad base; they're Type-Moon regulars who actually care enough to do the phone polls that Type-Moon does. Saber is pretty much the most popular female Nasuverse character in a broader sense. Ryougi wouldn't get near the top ten if the fan polls weren't limited to more hardcore fans.

And regarding Rider, much of her strength comes from her Monstrous Strength, similar to how Saber uses Prana Burst, but MS just has a higher "cap," effectively. Saber has B-ranked Strength, and I think A-rank under Rin, but isn't physically stronger than a teenager.

Ryougi wasn't even in that poll. I'll admit that the results were probably a little slanted, but honestly Sakura really does have a lot of haters, and I bet it's even worse in Japan since apart from our issues they might even get all bitchy about the whole non virgin thing and would be more annoyed about the proactive sex thing.

Anyway, that's the source of some of her strength, but she doesn't even use that that much. Even without it she's still really physically powerful.

Huh, so a lot of Japanese actually like Sakura. Personally speaking, I like her, but that's because I'm biased towards both Childhood Friend and Cute and Psycho type girls. I can't comprehend why Dark Sakura is so low though.

Full Battle Mode

That's the first time Sakura's done well in a popularity poll, actually. In the 2009 version she finished ninth behind Rider amongst others, which got referenced in Carnival Phantasm. In some of the earlier polls she came behind Illya as well.

The 2011 poll was done through Type Moon's mobile site, which probably explains the oddities like Extra Caster placing so highly, and it's certainly the reason why all the mobile site mascots like Chikagi are so high

And of course, Archer is number 1. Although it is a shame that Kotomine didn't place as high.

That would be a lousy reason to hate someone, although that poll seems to indicate things are improving since she's higher.

And now I'm done, as I really don't want to start another Sakura discussion, whether to defend her, insult her, or whatever.

I bet the reason Rider's popular is because she has a mask and she's called Rider.

@Nyarly: Well I like Sakura. But I like Rider too. She gets more character development in Heaven's Feel, yes.

And yes, I feel Fate was actually not bad, though that's mostly because I like Saber too.

Sounds about right. Also reminds me again, I have to watch more KnK.

That not so much, though. Why is EXTRA Saber so much more unpopular than the "normal" one (actually, the real question is why they look the same, when they are different people, something I probably never live down, but whatever)? My best guess is that Extra, as a spin-off PSP isn't all that well-known (although it seems to be fairly successful in Japan). That would raise the question why EXTRA Caster is number three then, though.

I wouldn't be surprised if the male EXTRA protagonist ranked lower than the female one (I really don't like his design, somehow his hair looks stupid to me), but it's odd that he isn't even in the poll.

People aren't as awful as the internet makes them out to be.

It is quite interesting is that R. Shiki is quite popular. I can't really count on the reliability of the poll but this pleases me to a degree.

I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.

I find her high popularity a little odd myself. Having 50% more votes than Saber just seems strange. Then again, the movies were a better adaptation of source material than the FSN anime.

Haven't seen anything with Kara No Kyoukai, but I was under the impression that R. Shiki was considered Bad Ass for being able to kill anything, anything, anything, under the sun without the drawback of slowly killing herself like Tohno.

Wouldn't that have something to do with it?

I liked her a lot (I never saw the animated adaptation just read the stories), her personality was way more interesting than Tohno Shiki's even with the same ability.

^^ Well, I'm not used to anime fans liking female characters who aren't particularly cute. Especially when I take into account how popular I assume Saber is.

Yes, but Saber can also swing a Wave Motion Sword, so her being popular while cute makes sense to me.

Then again, Japanese is oddly obsessed with cuteness. Which is probably why we have Bad Ass Adorable as a trope, considering how often someone cute is also Bad Ass in anime.

I also found it somewhat strange that R. Shiki would place high as well. Not that she's a bad character, of course, but I didn't think Kn K would be popular enough to warrant something like that.

I wouldn't say she's an ugly character.

She's a little violent and doesn't act feminine, but she does show a cute side I think.

Although I'm not a fan of her really.

I loved Ryougi Shiki. Something in her personality is very interesting.

(Also, she has a rather unique outfit choice.)

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks Ryougi is awesome.
