Square has an unhealthy obsession with graphics that sort of botched the 1.0 it seems.

There was a reason that it was part of the decision to force the original director of 1.0 into retirement, even though he was one of the founders of Squeenix.

2.0 onward is still being held back in some aspects by still using 1.0's engine (which itself is an engine that has been in use since final fantasy 9 back in 2001), like I think the plant pots in housing areas still have way too many pixels which is why they're hesitant to give residential districts landmass expansions instead of opening new wards.

FFXIV is still strapped by tech debt yeah. It started out using Crystal Tools but has basically been modified so heavily that it is an amalgam of its own.

And no, the plants and such were scaled back appropriately. They got something that required an I7 minimum to play to run on a PS 3 after all. Housing is really strapped by server side space issues apparently. And well having hundreds of player manipulated doodads in one space is really nuts and damn Kugane is extremely busy even without that.

They have been heavily working with Nvidia on updating the game and improving performance, the minimum requirements went DOWN going from Stormblood to Shadowbringers.

Storage sucks so bad because of it, apparently. There's a bunch of really inelegant workarounds in use to keep track of everyone's inventories. Which mostly works out fine for SE as it so happens since they can charge extra for things like retainers.

The game originally didn't have an inventory system like it does today. It was an unsorted server side list of items, no tool tips and all. The system currently is basically a glorified mod of the original thats kinda demanding on space issues from what they have said.

The issues around that are why we have a saddlebag instead of just more inventory space.

Honestly though the only thing I really miss from 1.0 is the map size and Coerthas. Mor Dhona originally went all the way around the lake and Coerthas was more than 2 zones. We have yet to see anything of Coerthas Central Lowlands, Coerthas Eastern Highlands, Coerthas Eastern Lowlands.

Err well we see a bit of the edge of the Coerthas Eastern Lowlands if you look down during the Battle of Big Bridge raid.

they could bring an updated Lowlands in for some post restoration xpac, I actually liked the rocky forest type area it once was.

I missed having distinct battle themes by region, not just kind of half assed variants of the same song. They got most of them back into the game already in some way or another, Nail of the Heavens in particular being a big favorite of mine, but while you're running around ARR areas you're stuck with the incredibly boring main battle theme.

I'm just catching up on 5.2 and the bit where you're just pantomiming with sepia toned screenshots from the MSQ to tell the story is amazing

I would love for them to add in a system like the Heirloom system from WoW for token gear (by which I mean Ironworks, Shire, etc.). Not in terms of extra bonuses, but in terms of there being a separate menu where the token gear you've unlocked is "stored". In WoW, the heirlooms are unique (I think) and can't be sold, disenchanted, etc., so you can basically create one by pulling it out of the storage menu into your inventory, but you only need to use bag space (or inventory space) on it when you need it, and you can trash it consequence-free otherwise.

It would be a hell of a lot easier than filling up my retainers' bags with unsorted token gear for the classes I'm leveling. I hate having to hold onto my Augmented Shire Custodian gear on the off-chance I ever level WAR or PLD, because I know I'll kick myself in the future if I chuck it.

It's been fun.

Poetics are easy enough to get that you might as well just chuck it.

They do have reclaims for the Relic weapons and such. Actual unique gear though you have your armory chest which you can use to store the items.

I'll be honest, I forget the Armory chest exists because it's so goddamn useless. You can store maybe what, 30 items? We've been over it before, but you can store holiday items and that's basically it.

It's one of those systems that's actually worse than having nothing at all, because of how pointless it is.

It's been fun.

You can store your level 50 class set in it.

Also there is the Calamity Salvager for your other class sets, the replica vendors, and 400 slots in your dresser.

Steering away from Psycho Rangers with daddy issues, this year's Little Ladies Day event is pretty cute. The repeatable quest lets you call in an NPC to visit the sick kids. They are: the CUL guild leader, the GLA guild leader, the aetehstican, Nanamo, the Songstresses, Kal Myhk (youngling dragon from a HW side quest), and Gyorin (Namazu whose role I cannot recall)

I think Gyorin is the seamstress namazu.

Picked up the game in January and been slowly making my way through, currently a level 62 Paladin and doing the Dragonsong War quests. I've definitely noticed the gameplay, story and characters getting a lot better the further I get.

A Realm Reborn was alright and engaging enough to keep going, but way too fillery. It only really started picking up story-wise for me when I met Cid and got to Coerthas. The patch content, while also fillery in places, had a bit more engaging story and improved a lot with the other characters becoming more active. Plus the finale of 2.55 was fantastic.

Heavensward has been even better for me, with so many good characters and a storyline I really enjoyed. The only real problem I have with it is the lackluster resolution of the 2.55 plot. Really felt like it was just kinda swept under the rug.

Looking forward to what else is to come.

Oh, I was wrong - Gyorin is the merchant Namazu involved in a few quests with Reunion in the Azim Steppe and a lot of the Namazu beast tripe quests.

It's been fun.

New patch notes out and they nerfed TG Cid to oblivion:

The following changes have been made to the battle with the Thunder God in the Orbonne Monastery.

The damage dealt when Shadowblade domes overlap has been reduced.

The duration of the Bleeding debuff applied by Shadowblade has been reduced.

The damage dealt when too few players are standing on the Duskblade circle has been reduced.

The potency of the Burst attack used by the icewolves has been reduced.

The effect of the Vulnerability Up debuff has been weakened.

I stopped doing alliance roulettes because I was sick to death of LotA. Maybe now people won't cheese their ILVLs as much.

[up]x5 I'd like to say that it's now impossible to wipe on TG Cid, but knowing the (great) community (BTW)...
