It's not that uncommon in literary criticism, actually. Many an essay has been written speculating about the history and inner life of an author, without being particularly bothered by actually finding out some biographical facts or corroborating evidence. Basically taking Death of the Author to it's logical extreme.

In our case, it's more like Dearth of the Author's Information that causes us to speculate.

I wonder if Tats has ever attended a con, even anonymously? He'd have a lot more readers — and possibly even a market for his books — if he made himself accessible to fans.

So, your audience seems to consist entirely of people who would breath your farts if you offered, and people who don't take well to being blatantly insulted in your act.

There's a REASON I think Monique is a stand in for Tats.

Where do they keep getting the tomatoes? You'd think this club would start screening patrons for produce projectiles after a bit.

He doesn't need to be an "Internet personality." He could engage his fans in his forum and still retain his privacy. He could attend cons, talk to his readers face-to-face, participate in panel discussions, and still not give out his home address or phone number.

Scanning the list of webcomics that I regularly read, I note that the creators of Girl Genius, Questionable Content, Gunnerkrigg Court, Schlock Mercenary, Evil, Inc., Mare Internum, SMBC, and a host of others all have avid fan bases ... and they engage their fans at cons. They also create interesting comics, and they don't go out of their way to insult their fans.

I know this is hilarious coming from someone who could rather fairly be described as "the queen of no chill," but can we calm it down, just a smidge?

No coconuts! Even if Monique comes across as so arrogant at times that she probably does bottle her own farts and sells them as perfume to her fans

I thought it was a good strip even with the blatant author avatarization and straw manning of his critics.

I'd even go so far as to say I believe Tats has upped his game recently vis-a-vis storytelling and humour

But....

If the past teaches us anything about Tats, it's that when he produces decent stuff, it means we'll shortly be searching for new synomyns for the words "Dross", "Insane" and "Facepalm"

(Hunkers down and waits for Tats to hit an own goal so spectacular you'll be able to see the fireworks from Jupiter)

This is getting old. I know throwing tomatoes is old shorthand for showing how bad someone's show bombed, but here in the real world, it's assault. Especially when it's not done in the anonymity of a dark theater. Even though the easy response is; "this isn't the real world! See, they walled off reality!" or... "It's a metaphor for the way fragile white CIS boys can get away with anything!" It's just lazy.

In the Real World, if half of WokeMonique's audience was her fans and the other half tomato-throwers, the brawls would rival the street fights by rabid soccer fans.
