Well he hasn't replied and he has been on since I sent the PM, so I don't know what to say really.
You could create a thread asking about the status of the fanfic, citing that the last time Halbarad talked about it here, he specifically stated he may continue the story for at least the rest of "volume 1" using Brian's notes.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.I really just don't see the point. If Halbarad won't answer PMs, what good would making a thread do? "Hey, anyone know what's up with KBDH/Hal?" "Go ask Hal yourself" "I did months ago and he didn't answer, and I saw that he's been on since then several times." "Well if he won't talk you're SOL then."

Yearly remembrance of greatness. Anyone still around? Have a toast. To Kyon. To the Harem. To Durandall. May He forever be remembered. Cheers!

The Clock is Wound, The Future Must Commence! (tm)The hole may never truly go away.
... Has it been over 4 years already? Dammit, and I haven't gotten around to checking the Soul Riders site for the remaining KBDH material. So much happened IRL to distract me...
Anyway, I just found out that several folders in Characters.Kyon Big Damn Hero are still in the "placeholder" stage, i.e. lacking descriptions and/or trope entries since none of us remembered to come back and fill them as new chapters emerged. I think it might require a rereading of the story to do it properly, no?
EDIT: Also, for some reason that I forget at the moment, I looked up the chapters covering Tachibana's Ret-Gone attempt on Kyon (44-45)... and I can't make sense of Fujiwara's (obviously simplified) explanation in Chapter 45 of what was going and could have happened had certain measures not been taken.
Here's a quote of the explanation, with the parts that I'm 100% sure are relevant but am unable to understand marked in bold.
Kyon nodded grudgingly, hoping he wasn't confirming some guess of Fujiwara's — though he didn't know what specifically Kanae attached to about people.
The time traveler sighed in disgust. "When Tachibana, that stupid bi—" he was cut off by a passing car horn, the last of the irate drivers passing "—stuck you halfway between Sasaki's closed space and reality ... she split you in half." Fujiwara raised both fists, touching them together with pointer-fingers side-by side, drawing them apart to illustrate. "Michikyuu Kanae tried to find you, but couldn't manifest in Sasaki's presence. Once she could reach both halves, she stuck them back together." He brought his fists back together. "You follow?"
It was strange, but it did make sense. He didn't really feel like he was split in two, and he wondered how exactly things like mass worked ... but then, the rules of closed spaces might be different from regular space. "That's already happened, though," he said, shaking his head. "How is that a problem?"
"Imagine if, when this happened ... there were already two of you," Fujiwara held his fists up again, pointer fingers extended, but separate. "The original you," he said, waving his right fist slightly, "and your Elder self — the one I'm talking to." The left fist bobbed.
Taking a deep breath, he looked at Kyon intently. "Now ... Tachibana splits you in half to get you stuck." He popped up the middle finger of his right hand, and Kyon suddenly felt incredibly uneasy.
"Michikyuu Kanae, assuming she doesn't hurt herself trying to lock on to three instances of yourself, and frag out by splitting herself into pieces, finds one of you — hopefully not the one in front of me right now, or else we run straight into as/as-not. Let's say she finds the you she can reach in Sasaki's closed space." He wiggled his middle finger very slightly.
"Yeah..." Kyon mumbled, feeling nervously sick as he suspected where Fujiwara was going with this.
"Michikyuu Kanae then puts you back together," he explained, smacking his fists together loudly enough to make a clap, leaving only a single finger on his left hand extended, his right falling to his side.
"I can't find a fault in his logic," Ryouko offered from his pocket. "This seems completely accurate, given our knowledge." Somehow, Kyon was starting to suspect that even without her input.
"Glad you agree, at least," the time traveler muttered, startling Kyon to realize he could see and hear her.
Ryouko blinked, but didn't say anything in response.
"And then," Fujiwara continued, dropping his left hand as well, "we reach the point of as/as-not — except, I very much doubt that there's enough sentient force outside of the being that created your dolls to resolve it. And they don't have a reason to entangle themselves with local time. What will most likely happen is....
"You have to go back in time to try and keep things from going out of control, and your existence from that point onward becomes an unstoppable, eternal spiral of twisted time — crossing your own trail and being merged with yourself.... You have to go back, because it's a pre-determined event. Eventually you become trapped in a fragment of non-concurrent reality — cut off from the rest. From your perspective.
"From the perspective of everyone else — once it's complete, you will never have existed at all. You'll be completely fragged out. And if that happens, every person you've ever had an effect on has their actions changed as a result. Considering now that you're entangled with Suzumiya Haruhi and Sasaki.... You probably don't care about me, but this will most likely erase Asahina Mikuru as well."
Kyon swore again.
For the life of me, I can't remember what I thought when I first read that. I even went back to Page 150-ish of this thread, tracked down the chapter's debut and reviewed the posts concerning said chapter... only a couple of posts commented on what Fujiwara said, and they all were expressing similar confusion, only it was specifically over what he meant by "as/as-not" and nothing else.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. And people still come to here... not that I should be that surprised, I'm here too.
Now about Kyon: I think is that Kyon's status temporal-wise would become <error> and so the timeline'd just throw Kyon away as a result. Note that Fujiwara implied that Kyon would still exist after that, just that according to everything and everyone else it'd be like Kyon had never existed at all.
Kyon: Big Damn Hero: timeline & trailerWait, I think I got it: In the second case, poor Kanae's ignorance of the fact that the third Kyon might be a time-travelling future instance and the haste that she's operating with due to the stressful circumstances will cause her to unthinkingly try merging all three instances of Kyon together... meaning that she will unwittingly cause future!Kyon to be completely "orphaned" from the timeline, as his past self would no longer exist beyond that point in time. And nothing he will do afterwards would be able to reverse the damage done.
Future!Kyon will be isolated forever in a Pocket Dimension of screwed-up time that has been excised from the rest of the timeline, while the rest of the timeline will have every single trace of Kyon Ret-Gone from it entirely to resolve the paradox.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.I think that's how I interpreted it back then.
God, it's been years since I've even checked the forum. I really need to reread KBDH at some point. I remember reading it while traveling to/from college every couple weeks...
Does anyone know if Halbarad is still writing anything? His Fanfiction account hasn't had anything posted since 2013 and I don't know where else to look.
Anybody still got a copy or a working download link to the Kyon: Big Damn Hero visual novel?
Hey, does anyone know where the deceased authors notes are? I read in the chapter 64 manuscript that Durrandall’s notes were left behind to another troper who said he would also be working on the project. Does anyone know ow to access them?
I'm not even sure why, but I can't ever forget this. I love this little place, the story, the people. I'm still around. If I can help with something, I'm here.
Kyon; He's in his harem, All's right with the world Scratching at the cat box since 1986 while Battling with Dread Shoelace Robots.Any particular part of Soulriders, or is it just sort of buried somewhere in there? Looking for it right now.
Still missing this. Is Halbarad working on anything at all or has he disappeared from the interwebs?
I guess four months is on the borderline for a necro...
The recent posting of a new Haruhi story by Tanigawa got me reminiscing about the series in general, and I remembered how much fun I had with this fanfic. I don't think I ever read the whole thing - I had definitely fallen off before Brian's passing - but you know, I'm starting to think I should give it another go. Just to say I have.
It's been fun.Today, I found myself watching my favorite scene from Disappearance, again. It has helped me reach a smidge of clarity in what is a wonderfully messed up moment in my relationships.
Inevitably, I thought of what I think of as a sequel of that all; which would be K:BDH.
And of you guys, and of Brian Randall.
You keep, after, what, ten years? You keep being in my heart.
Kyon; He's in his harem, All's right with the world Scratching at the cat box since 1986 while Battling with Dread Shoelace Robots. Thanks, Agasa. Really glad to know there are still people who remember this fanfic fondly.
BTW, for anyone who's using HTTPS Everywhere or the like, for some reason the soulriders.net domain gives out error pages if you try to access it as an https address; just switch to "http" in the URL and it will work fine.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. It, and y'all, are still in my heart
Anyone know what happened to the author who was continuing the story? Are they still writing?
Also, any similar stories y'all would recommend?
I still think about this fic frequently, and it's still my favorite out of the fanfiction I've read.
If anyone happens to get hold of the notes wrapping up Book One, I would be interested in a copy. It's been over a decade since KBDH began, and none of us are getting younger. Very interested in how the story lie wends its way to a conclusion. Like others here, there is little result in contacting anyone on Soul Riders; the only addition there that I haven't found anywhere else is the final chapter as left those several years ago. While I don't post frequently, I do check this forum somewhat regularly for updates, and do miss the heyday (and everyone here) as well.
Until next time ...
I hope he answers. What is dead may never die, but rises again harder and stronger.
And yes, after all these years I never changed my avatar.
