Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

It's optional, but there is an npc in Corel that will tell the party he saw a man in a black cape and a tattoo of the number "1" heading that way.

It's a fairly common thing in RPGs. Where the player characters are trying to get one place, but there's a different place put directly in your way such that most players will visit it without thinking about it. Maybe with some small lead to give justification for why the party would in-universe choose to visit, like [up][up]. And completing the the plot in that area will give you something needed to reach the area you were originally trying to reach, which would have been blocked off if you were the type to ignore the obvious next area and try to skip ahead (in this case, a river blocks you off from the next region and you needed to coincidentally get that buggy at the Gold Saucer to proceed).

I mean if you're cruising through Nevada and Las Vegas is between you and your destination your two choice are to sleep in your pickup truck with shitty sleeping bags and no pillows or to stop in Las Vegas.

I don't understand why this is a mystery.

So Kadaj got added to the Global version of Opera Omina, and he’s actually pretty interesting. His main gimmick is that the more he attacks a single enemy, the stronger his debuffs are against it. His EX move even makes enemies unable to remove his debuffs. Do he’s pretty damn useful against single bosses

I'll have to go back to that at some point. Trying Interlude and...dammit ever since they introduced multiple floors the story maps are becoming draining.

I'm quite confident in my shitposting you know

So at some point after I stopped crying and moaning, I got back to XIV. MMO's are just not for me in general, but once I get used to some things, I am having fun with it.

After spending an eternity levelling all the class jobs to 30 in order to get an idea of their playstyles, it occurred to me that most of these jobs would change drastically after getting the soul crystal thing so I probably still don't have the strongest grasp on them, but oh well, I was set on Monk from the getgo. Was quite surprised that I found the white mage to be fun, and didn't care for being the tank in general though.

Story so far is... fine? It's 99.9% fetch quests for several hours until I finally get to fight a big dude, but I generally enjoy the actual story segments when they show up. Quite liked a lot of the initial job stories too, shame those are all done now.

The 1-50 plot is not the best its 50+ where it starts to ramp up and actually use the world building its been feeding you.

Classes do really change as they level, they dont usually start getting their key pieces till like 35. Some change substantially 50-60 (BLM especially) and others its 60-70. If you want a good gauge of a job post 30 try the Deep Dungeon, Palace of the Dead, which you can pick up at level 23. Its a randomized dungeon where you start at level 1 and level to 60 really quickly and it doesn't affect the outside. So you can play it at 60 without spending time grinding.

Class storylines do shift over to the job storylines 30+ but thats not to say the class characters are completely uninvolved in the future. 50+ the storylines tend to be a mix of both class and job characters. Very few things get actually dropped.

I keep forgetting that palace exists, didn't think to use it as training grounds. I'll keep that in mind.

Good to know job characters come back at some point. I definitely prefer the Pugilist group to the monk and scientist for one.

The ARR content (the story from level 1 to 50) is honestly very lacking. It's average at best, with some pretty horrid pacing, mediocre voice acting and lack of interesting characterization. If I'm honest, FFXIV's opening is kind of a big problem given how much it dissuades people from the game and how long the base game content lasts.

Fortunately after level 50 and once you get to Heavensward (which is now in the free trial in its entirety) the story, music, voice acting, etc experience a big leap in quality and it becomes a very good MMO.

Also, all the jobs change as you get more levels but some of them change more than others. Lancer/Dragoon starts off as a very one-dimensional and simplistic job but as you get further and further into it it gets quite a bit busier with many jumps to keep track of, a resource on a timer to manage, hitting positional skills, etc and Dragoon isn't even considered a particularly complex job to play. Black Mage apparently has a pretty bad skill progression where your rotation changes very wildly every 10 levels and certain spells become totally worthless after too long.

Oh yes that old PGL guy has some life in him still!

Also when you beat ARR you can pick up SAM and RDM, 60 you can grab DNC and GNB, when you enter Heavensward you can grab AST and DRK.

They just kinda throw you off the deepend in attempting to figure out the classes though. RDM and DNC are really simple once you figure out exactly what the class is supposed to do though. GNB is a DPS Tank, its rotation is more like a melee dps than others, at when you first get it it plays more like a PLD though.

The DRK storyline is considered one of the highlights of the game. smile

The only voice acting that's really bugged me so far is Minfilla's. The voice itself is fine, but she speaks her lines so slowly, it's like the VA is reading them for the first time. Or that Minfilla herself is struggling to match the dialect everyone else uses.

Minfillia in general is one of the bigger letdowns of ARR (I had a bigger post typed up but suffice it to say, you're given very little reason to care about her as anything other than an NPC sending you on fetch quests), voice acting included. But honestly most of the other actors in ARR sounded passable at best to me and struggling with lack of proper direction.

Honestly the only old VA I miss is Richard Epcar as Gaius if only because of how hammy he was.

Don't bother getting too attached to the ARR voice acting. They will all change in Heavensward.

All of ARR's English voice acting was rushed and added post launch with a bunch of Americans attempting to fake British accents. With Heavensward the Square's EU branch takes over the VO work with some famous English actors, like half the cast was in Game Of Thrones.

[up] For me... Hydaelyn (because Mary Elizabeth Mc Glynn is awesome) and Raubahn because Jason Miller does a damn good job as well as he sings the two key vocal songs in Shadowbringers.

Richard Epcar as Gaius was ok, probably one of the better performances if only because Epcar's hamminess gave the performance some energy. I can't really think of any ARR VA's I really miss though. Some people really liked Merlwyb's but it's hard for me to weigh in too much since up to the point I'm at (beginning of Stormblood) you only see her like once after ARR is done. I also hear some people mourning Gideon Emery as Urianger but honestly his performance really didn't work for me, instead of sounding stoic he just sounded super stilted and it really felt like he was struggling to deliver Urianger's Purple Prose dialogue naturally.

Merlwyb is the one voice I consider a straight downgrade, partly because her new VA is just trying to be her old VA and failing.

Food for thought: VII Remake probably still has a ways to go before really finishing the story, but it seems to already be a great way to revisit older entries.

When VII finishes, what entry would you guys like to see SE give the remake treatment to next? I'd really like to see them revisit Final Fantasy IX with this method.

IX is basically pretty perfect as is, no need to add more stuff IMO.

But on the other hand, seeing it fully voice acted would be pretty fun.
