Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

The guy who kidnapped Barret's daughter (Reeve) does call them out on the innocents who were killed, but someone who works in a totalitarian government is a fucking hypocrite considering how many people they've killed makes Barret's group look like angles in comparison

Ehhh... the tension behind them deflates, at least for me, after their boss' one-on-one talk with Sephiroth. The game is hit with a big feeling of "what now?" where the answer is to go out into the world and leave it behind.

You also have to take into account what the cultural difference on what being self assured is

Japan is... putting it mildly utterly ANAL at the prospect of being rude, So yeah Squall half heartedly apologizes for EVERYTHING thats what you do in japan.

however by western standards, thats not accomplishing Squall's goal of appearing like he has it all together by Western standards thats being a passive aggressive wiener!

so Squall in the west acts Aloof and cold and openly dismissive of what you think of him cause Your just an idiot peon blinded by your emotions and unable to think pragmatically/professionally

Squall isn't trying to look professional though. Squall is trying to avoid human contact because he's traumatized with abandonment issues. He doesn't act like a dick because he wants to look stoic, that's the exact wrong interpretation of him that the English translation causes. He acts like a dick because he's a teenager who's also a social idiot.

When he tells Quistis in one of his more famous scenes to "go talk to a wall", he's not saying that to make himself look cool and collected for not having emotions, he says that because he doesn't want to deal with the emotional intimacy involved with someone venting their emotional issues to out him, and he's gotten uncomfortable enough with the situation that he started to rudely tell her to stop instead of staying quiet and waiting for her to give up on emotionally connecting with him.

Except he outright says that He acts a specific way to discourage people, He says it when 'talking' to comatose Rinoa on the bridge

Squall intentionally pushing people away is part of his character, Not He's SO FUCKING BAD AT IT that everytime He does it, its due to social bumbling,

That would defeat the whole purpose of having Squall's inner monelouge where He says one thing outside/ says the opposite on the inside

That doesn't contradict anything I said. He acts emotionally distant and aloof to keep other people away. His only social bulmbling is more that he doesn't seek to be rude and cause issues with people. That doesn't mean he's trying to look self assured necessarily, he doesn't want people know what he's really like, so if he's quiet and people think he's unemotional and hard to understand, then that makes things easy for him.

Yeah I do like that when Cait Sith calls Barret out his response is that he doesn't want to hear that shit from someone from fucking Shinra, and Cait is genuinely ashamed about it. And then Barret admits he had a point later after some soul searching.

VII's surprisingly even about its treatment of its heroes and its villains.

Shinra are awful, yes. But the entire sequence of events leading to Sector 7 being crushed are entirely AVALANCHE's fault, and they don't just let the guy behind those terrorist attacks off even if he's ultimately more sympathetic than Shinra.

Squall intentionally pushes people away but he is also really bad at interacting with people anyway - probably in part due to lack of practice

It doesn't help that both acts of violence don't accomplish much. Our plucky freedom fighters blow up a reactor, and that barely seems to phase Shinra in the slightest. It's something brought up in their latest financial report, and that's about it. And Shinra screwing over a whole Sector in an act of cartoonish villainy kills like 3, people you've barely gotten to know, and the rest are just nameless civilians.

I mean, I'm pretty sure Reeve points out that wiping out an entire sector to kill a small handful of Terrorists is pretty insane.

Shinra is entirely to blame for going that far.

thats a fairly weird way of saying its even...

VII pretty much paints the Turks as Punch Clock Villains once you're out of Midgar even though THEY do most of the dirty work.

In fact I think the one time the party remember to bring it up is ONLY if you choose to fight them at the end of Disc 2 which ends with them running away. while the game constantly brings up the reactor explosions and Barrett reflecting on it all

It wants to place the blame on the shoulders of the horridly corrupt corporate execs but the Shinra execs save Rufus and Hojo are all hilariously cartoonishly/transparently evil that it falls flat

I mean The shinra execs make Captain Planet villains look subtle

Hojo is of course a monster and Rufus is... Rufus

They blow up a reactor, which killed many innocent people and otherwise just pisses Shinra off, as [up]x4 says. Barret's convinced they're doing right by the planet, but it's never made clear if they even really are or not, and people who want nothing to do with their crusade nor Shinra are dying as a result.

Shinra (over)reacts by destroying the sector they operate out of. AVALANCHE accomplished relatively little with the destruction of a reactor and millions die in the end as a result. Shinra is not remotely right with how they responded, but neither are AVALANCHE for instigating conflict with them in such a poorly conceived way to begin with.

To be fair, you'd expect Shinra, having apparently known what Sector to check, could have at least tried sending a guy or two around to find them first, before resorting to Plan: Fucking Kill Everything.

...Then again, they had a hard time catching Aerith despite knowing where she lived, so.

They weren't actively trying to catch Aerith for all that time though. They were just having Tseng watch her for all those years. It seems like they only kidnapped her when they did because she was actively helping Avalanch at the time, and she might have gotten crushed by the plate if they left her.

It's possible they wanted Aerith to join them willingly....except they sent Reno to capture her.

They only really gave up on using her when Sephiroth returned, and seemed like a better choice somehow.

So yeah, not sure how they failed to capture her all this time. Maybe Tseng was somewhat phoning it in, and Reno failing was just dumb luck due to Cloud being there.

Killing everything has always been Shinra's MO, though. Isn't that the whole reason Barret wound up with custody of Marlene?

I like that Machinabridged points out that while Shinra were cartoonishly evil for destroying Barret's hometown, Dyne's just going around murdering people for shits and giggles.

It never is explained why he was randomly on the killing spree. He's apparently been there for a while and I get that he's lost his mind but I guess any thing can set you off when you're that unstable.

So I mainly know FFXV from Kuvo and friends playing it two years ago. I've wanted to experience it for myself though and I just learned an update that came a little after their LP lets you play as the other three bros in gameplay. That's really damned cool and I wish more than ever that I could get FFXV. Just a few more months I guess w hen I have more disposable income....

Not sure if they played the "improved" ending. I don't know what the patches added for the last couple chapters.
