A group has claimed responsibility, but the true motive is unknown.
The group is apparently called Anonymous Sudan.
Anonymous Sudan’s most recent post, from the morning of 11 July, is actually a ransom demand.
Info suggests that they’re a pro-Moscow hacking group.
"Exit muna si Polgas. Ang kailangan dito ay si Dobermaxx!"Yeah, AO3's announcement warns their stated goals are likely bull.
Two questions: First, how can they demand a ransom? You can't keep a DDOS attack going forever, and they don't have access to any data. Second, I thought AO3 had protections against this sort of thing? Over the past couple weeks I've noticed that I'm locked out more often when I refresh too many pages at once; doesn't that blunt the force of attacks like this?
Huh, so that’s what’s been going on. Odd to see them targeting a website like this, though.
Well, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

My AO3 profile. Let sleeping cats lie and be cute and calming.I think they claimed to be targeting America-based websites, and AO3 is a popular American website.

Has a fansite been targeted like this before?
Vehicle-Based Characterization | Grief-Induced Split | Locker MailNot to my knowledge.
Anyway, it looks like ao3 is back up and running.
I'm surprised they didn't have something like Cloudflare before for as much traffic as they get.
Didn't Fanfiction.net get DDOS'ed a bit ago? I think that's when they put in cloudflare.
For those who use it, how good id Wattpad?
Not great. The fic quality there tends to be poor and I don’t think the search is that good anyway. Also, lots of ads intruding through your reading.
I didn't think we might need a thread for this but given what is happening with ao3 right now, I figured a thread for keeping up with what is happening with fanfiction platforms might be a good idea.
