The Devil is missing.

Satan himself, Overlord of Hell, the Great Corrupter, the Snake of Eden, has vanished without a trace. In his absence, perhaps predictably, the Lords of Sin turned on each other to claim his empty throne. Lucifer, the Fallen Anger and Lord of Pride emerged victorious, his forces claiming the Ninth Circle of Hell for himself.

But, just as he was ready to take up the mantle of rulership himself, Hell erupted into chaos the likes of which no devil has ever seen. The Old Gods, banished by Him from Heaven, rose up in revolt and shattered Lucifers forces. Then human souls, without anybody keeping them contained or orpressed, broke out of their tormentous prisons and shattered any authority the devils still had.

Now, Lucifer is trapped in the Ninth Circle, under siege. Hell itself is divided between the Warlords, powerful human souls, and the Old Gods, mythical beings from before the ascent of the One True Lord. The underworld is changing from a prison to a wild frontier, filled with violence, opportunity and desire.

All of this is of little concern to humanity, who continue their existence, oblivious to the upheaval beneath their feet. Life goes on, equally stepped in Sin and elevated through Virtue.

Except a small group of students, who one day land in Hell. They are not supposed to be there. And in their attempt to find out why they died and how to get back to Earth, they will upend the new, fragile status quo in the Afterlife. A clash of heroes and villains. Of Gods and Men. Of Devils and Angels.

So one can reach Heaven through Hell...

Welcome, all of you, to my new project here on TV Tropes. This is a bit of a depature of my usual games and somewhat of a return to my earlier RP's, when I started out on this forum. In a sense, this is my attempt to do a form of these games properly this time around.

Heaven Through Hell is at its core a Battle-RP. This means focus on stylized action, Rule of Cool and an anime-theme. Of course, there will be a central plot and some, hopefully, interesting takes on shonen-tropes. But the main-part of this game will be the players getting into amazing fights, getting new powers and beating imposing enemies, while unveiling the mystery behind this setting.

The game is heavily inspired by Shin Megami Tensei and Fate/Stay Night. Hell is not just populated by devils and demons, but also polythestic gods and plenty of human souls, some of them famous throughout history, like Genghis Khan, Oda Nobunaga or Christopher Columbus. Players will meet, ally and/or fight these beings, during their journey.

Heaven Through Hell follows a homebrew rule-system, that puts emphasis on the narrative of a fight/scene, rather than the outcome. Players will have to make tactical decisions, based on who fights who and when its best to take a loss, rather than a win. Narrative play and a good thematic roleplaying will be rewarded, rather than chaining victories together.

Players will play students, who at the start of the story had an unfortunate accident that landed them in Hell. How and why this happened will be the central question, they will seek answers to. The characters don't need to know everyone personally, but should have a connection to at least one other character in the group. Be that siblings, rivals, friends, etc. Nationalities are up to you, there are restrictions on that.

General rules to the RP: No ghosting, godmodding or powerplaying. Be civil and keep to RP-etiquette. There will be quality-checks on character-sheets. This RP will be open to FIVE players, although new spots can open up depending on how well this game performs. Priority will be given to the best character-sheets, rather than the firsts.

If you want to participate, you can say so here and then join up on the Discord-Server, so we can discuss your character. Or write me a PM over the forum.

Looking forward to writing with all of you.

  • Name: Your characters name. This can be both their real name and their nickname/title.

  • Age: Your characters age.

  • Appearance: Looks and physical traits of your character, including equipment. Can either be a picture or a full description

  • Personality: What is your character like? Quirks, likes and dislikes.

  • History: The backstory. Please recount your characters life here. Also explain how they became part of the group, be it through accident or on purpose. Do NOT include how they died, since that will be part of the intro.

  • Stigma: This is the power your character obtains early on, with which to combat their enemies in Hell. Stigmas are souls of heroes, mythical beings or devils that either agreed or have been forced into a contract with your character.

There are three forms of Stigma.

  • Armament, which is a Stigma manifesting as a weapon or armor or tool. Examples being Excalibur, Achilles Shield, etc.
  • Curses, which are esoteric powers given by the Stigma and depend on the soul. These can be magical abilities, like telekinesis or the ability to fly. Curses also have a subtle effect on their users personality.
  • Alter, which is the fusion of a soul and the contractor. The user then takes on an appearance similar to the soul they fused with, like clothes. Alters improve physical abilities, like strength, speed, combat skills, etc. They also affect the users general appearance permamently in subtle ways outside of the transformation.
Please describe what Stigma you have and what effect/appearance it possesses. Also mention what kind of soul you got the Stigma from. At the start, these should be minor and/or obscure beings, like Van Leiden, the Headless Horseman, etc.

  • Misc.: Anything that doesn't fit into the other categories can be put in here.

  • Name: Evan Olivas
  • Age: 17
  • Appearance: Physically short for his age at only about 5'5 and skinny to boot, almost no muscle definition or particular shape. Freckles dot almost every inch of his skin and his hair is a dark red, through it is usually kept hidden under the hood of his jacket. Evan's outfit is fairly standard outside of a blue hoodie with stitched in clouds dotting all across it, which he wears on all but the hottest of summer days. He can normally be found with his hood up anywhere he can get away with doing so.
  • Personality: Evan is what some might call a happy nihilist, believing that nothing has meaning or purpose, and thus seeks out to fill the gaps with his own desires and wants. The things that he likes are good, and those that oppose that are evil. His worldview is utterly selfish but not cruel. There is a level of understanding that he has come to with other people, mostly in that treating them kindly makes him happy as well, thus he sees it as a net positive to be kind to others.
  • History: Evan has always had a history of ending up in a group more out of happenstance then any actual effort of his own, slotting in to fill whatever niche that a group lacks and playing to his role with great ability. Even when people try to get to know the boy behind the role he simply digs himself deeper and builds upon any emotional falsehood with a perfectly synched story or history. Why he does this is largely unknown as he has a family life that is entirely to plain to mention and has never suffered any great tragedy in his life. Despite this however he continues his role as a fill in, and if ever forced to answer why would simply say 'a side character suffers no loss and has much more control of their destiny'.
  • Stigma Contractor-Legion: Amongst the countless denizen's of the afterlife there are those who will never make an impact. Soldiers who served under great men but were never great themselves, scholar's who sought answers but whose texts were burned, and of course monsters that never saw the light of day. These desperate souls band together to survive, small snippets of pasts and histories that don't matter coming together to form a greater whole.

  • Stimga Alter- Given that Evan has no set ideal of himself he can easily fuse together his base nature with one of the countless nameless and faceless specters that make up Legion in order to access their abilities. None of them are great or renowned for their skills, but this works to his advantage. The combat skill of a soldier mixed with the blood madness of a killer. The mind of a alchemist and the calm nature of a monk. Given that the souls that make up Legion have very little to them beyond small fragments of identity he can mix and match to become whatever 'him' Evan wants to be at the time. The perfect ability for someone whose identity can be changed to his liking on the fly.

This ability also physically effects Evan's body, granting him improved strength, speed, and intellect depending on which pieces of Legion that he is pulling from at any given moment. However this also has the effects of pulling up small parts and pieces of these entities, odd bits of armor and outfits from their lives. He might have a SWAT helmet mixed with the armor of a Roman soldier. The tools of an ancient ninja matched with the skills of a card thrower who traveled from bar to bar. None of his abilities are the strongest, nor can any individual member of the Legion claim to have a skill that no one else will ever manage to match. But the sheer number of skills and mixtures make him a dangerous foe to have.

Be better, because what is the harm in trying?

  • Name: Noah Samsen
  • Age: 18
  • Appearance: Kind of a big guy with a round face, wears a lot of worn-out and practical clothes. Blond, always sort of dirty.
  • Personality: Relaxed and chilled-out more from ignorance than courage. This sort of privileged perspective has him ignorant of a lot of inconveniences in other people's lives, but he's not afraid to get his hands dirty and put in work. He just doesn't get everything about every aspect of that work.
  • History: Noah's family are craftspeople—an actual house of carpenters in the modern day. The prices rich people are willing to pay for handmade goods has put Noah's family into a lot of money, which let them live in a nice house out in the country. He's taken up and been successful in his school's 4-H club, getting some blue ribbons with hog husbandry, something he really enjoys.
  • Stigma - Curse: The Mothman, a mysterious undiscovered creature that appeared multiple times in and around Point Pleasant, West Virgina, shortly before the collapse of the Silver Bridge in that same town. A statue and yearly festival in Point Pleasant now draw tourists from all over. Noah can channel the power of the Mothman as an omen of doom in order to cause catastrophic failures in equipment and objects—swords snapping, guns misfiring, it's a highly variable power and the only way he directy controls it is by focusing on what will happen to it and the intensity of the misfortune. The more severe the misfortune he wishes on the target, the more the Curse acts up, however, causing him to suffer similarly bad twists of fate after causing misfortune to someone else.
