X-Men '97 (Disney +): Continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series

I never really vibed much with Evolution for some reason. I'm not sure why.

It's more a result of turning what was originally going to be a solo Wolverine show into an X-Men show.

My main problem with Evolution is that it took some cues with the movie but once it finally got out of its season 1 slump it got better.

I think the only complaint I have of '97 is how some male characters have visible lips. The details just makes it Unintentional Uncanny Valley imo.

Also what do you guys think of Wolverine and the X-Men? Aside from Cyclops being an absolute pathetic loser, it's a pretty good show.

Wolverine and the X-men was awesome because it had the best Cyclops: dark, edgy, antihero cyclops.

And wolverine trying to be a good leader while being terrible at it.

OH and Kitty Pryde.

I also loved that their Magneto was just complete scum PRETENDING to be a Noble Demon. We need more of that.

I’d rather not reduce Magneto to a one note villian thank you.

Being a survivor of a horrible tragedy doesn't prevent someone from becoming a total douche.

Have Kitty and Magneto ever bonded over their Jewishness? Maybe they hear Pretty Fly for a Rabbi on the radio and both go "I love this song!" at the same moment. idk

Lets just drop this then. I know this is true but this is still an awful thing to do.

I think the closest those two have gotten to bonding over their shared, non-mutant heritage was when Magneto saved her from the giant, planet-killing bullet that she had phased herself into and then immediately made intangible to save the world from being destroyed (from the end of Whedon's run, though Magneto saving her from it happened some years after, I think in Bendis's run) and spoke to her in Yiddish afterward.

Wolverine and X men was actually my introduction to X Men, I still have fond memories of it.

He was more complex from that, its only in final act where he goes really evil (quonestiable standards by which he imprisons mutants he considers “trouble makers” on Genosha aside.)

It’s probably just effect of her powers manifesting simmiliar to other psychics in series, made to look like that as nod to comics or because it was cool.

Given how episode reminds us of Jean(?) being Phoenix few times, not to mention title of the episode, it definetely seems like they want us to have it on our minds.

Magneto can work as evil but he still needs a minimum of nuance or nobility. He's popular exactly because he's a great mix of anti-villain/noble demon.

It's why Grant Morrison's Magneto and Ultimate Magneto are largely disliked, because because stories reduced Magneto to a complete mass-murdering monster super supremacist without any of his noble traits.

Anyone think we'll see some marvel cameos like in that Virus episode?

Like there's a broadcast on tv and we see a montage of everyone watching it. Like Tony Stark looking up from his workshop, a silhouetted Spidey watching display tv's upside down, or Moon Knight kicking someone into a a set?

Why would you make the terrorist and racial supremacist a Holocaust victim?

Which is an equally valid question from my perspective.

Mind you, I got into the X-men via Ultimate X-men. Magneto there is a stand in for George W. Bush. He's a Texas oil billionaire.

They wanted to give a reason for why he declared war on humanity, I guess. He was already on the receiving end of that bullshit, so the second time, he started killing them back.

Which is kind of the point, yeah.

If Magneto is going to be fighting the X-men and blowing up human politicians and launching missles, perhaps he shouldn't be all that sympathetic.

Claremont redeemed him but that's not every Magneto.

Yeah, the original Jack Kirby comics portrayed Magneto as basically mutant Hitler with zero sympathetic qualities.

Magento has been redeemed for decades.

The whole arc 97 is adapting here with him is when Magneto fully made his heel-face turn to join the X-Men and it has largely stuck. Generally he tends to be an anti-hero but he hasn't been full villain since Claremont's development of him.

Morrison's run aside, and even then, it got enough backlash from both fans and staff such that it was swiftly retconned once they left the book, so that instead, it was actually Xorn's twin brother, possessed by the sentient mold Sublime, pretending to be Magneto, pretending to be Xorn, even though that defied all logic.
