Helena nodded cordially to the aquatic fellow, studiously ignoring the escalating chaos that she could see out of the corner of her eye. As long as she was left out of the crossfire, it was no business of hers whether the girl cared to address her problems constructively rather than shouting about them. She looked instead to the others, and at the sight of so many youthful faces she was surprised to feel a wave of sorrow wash over her.
"Also...allow me to offer my condolences, to all of you. Many of you seem very young, and each of you deserved to live long, healthy lives. I'm sorry for your losses."

Elly gratefully took the hand offered and pulled herself up, a little weirded out by how she was standing on legs that apparently weren't solid. She decided she had better things to think about. Worrying had never been like her. She did move away from the growing storm in the other corner though. Some instinctive part of her feared the downpour.
"Thanks, Miss... uh... you had a really long, fancy name... I'll learn it soon. I'm Elly! I don't really know what a "element" is. Or a "issy-ky"... but... uh..."
Elly seemed to get distracted by constant buzzing, swatting at the flies that refused to leave her alone. "C'mon, shoo! Go away!"
When this proved fruitless, she turned back to the lady. "What was I sayin'?"

He got to his feet, casting the scarred girl a sympathetic glance. "Sorry about what happened to you. I...don't know what it's like, but it couldn't have been pleasant."

The air notably grew hotter and hotter, not enough for it to be suffocating but definitely enough for any newcomer to notice. Approaching the collective of confused figures was a young man in his late twenties approaching. His hair was bubbling flowing magma, his eyes were pure red with cracks of yellow and where he stepped, the ground melted and then solidified again.
The new comer casually and calmly approached while looking at the chaos and new, terrified individuals around him and chuckled a little bit.
“Deepest apologies, Marius. Had I remembered we were doing this today, I would not have left you out to dry, as it were.” He stepped up to the group and gave a simple nod, while his hand came up and combed his lava like hair from his face.
“Hello everyone. My name is Blaise and I’m extremely positive you’re all scared and confused.”
Is it selfish that I'm happy as we pass the setting sun?

Prescot had never really thought about what might happen to him after death, like many scientists of his day he had just assumed that once his brain finally flickered out he would simply disappear into nothingness. But the moment the pain of his broken bones stopped he found himself in a new and strange place surrounded by strangers. Not to mention that his body had shifted and become quite strange as well. Every inch of skin was covered by thick protective leather that kept the mass of disease and horror that was now his body contained so that others wouldn't be subjected to it. The mask on his face felt tight but not uncomfortably so, after all he had spent most of his days in the lab within a protective suit, so this wasn't so unusual.
A brief thought went toward the ethics of his current situation, pulled away after death to be used as a tool for others, for what other purpose would he be called upon in such a strange form then to be used for something beyond what his normal body could do. It could be argued that he hadn't made any direct agreement, but then again he had signed to donate anything useful to his body away when he had first received a license. If his soul could be considered as part of his body then it fit within that agreement. It was a grey area, something that he truly hated to consider but landed more in the white category. This was an acceptable use of his soul, so long as the goal he was tasked with was equally within the same zone.
Be better, because what is the harm in trying?

Following after Blaise was a woman around the same age with hair that billowed out behind her as if carried by a gentle breeze. Stepping into the temple, she gave an apologetic look towards Marius, saying sheepishly, "Sorry I'm late, Marius, I thought this was happening tomorrow. I really need to get a planner."
Looking over to the recently summoned newcomers, she greeted them with a wave, "Ah, salutations. You can call me Gale. I hope that we may all get along in this unorthodox situation we've found ourselves in."

Areana:
In a cacophony of chaos that for some reason involved raining honeys. Areana attempted to wrap this swarm of information to herself and tidy it all up as neatly as weaving a cloth. Yes, indeed, she died. No, this did not seem to be an afterlife, but rather another world entirely that was called Soltara. All of the "people" summoned here (and those who established themselves) were embodiment of certain elements. Areana looked at her hands, and the familiar feeling of content decay it gave off signaled only one thing for her. Yet, one thing was different.
There was no pain this time. A smile cracked on her face, yet the girl calmed herself, not reaching for the conclusion just to be sure.
"I'm Areana Belova, used to be seventeen. I don't think it matters now, to be honest," Areana laughed a little. Gale's greeting words rang for her more than other words that bounced around here. "Let's get along with each other, my fellow Avatars. Even if I represent illness."
The feeling of death blew away quickly, as the continuation of life was enough to smudge the shock that would surely come with death of all kinds. Perhaps, the fact that she was not alone helped mitigate the transition into this new life.
Still, the thoughts about her parents and acquaintances lingered on her. How is my father doing right now? Or my mother? Or everyone else? Do they still grieve for me? Moved on from me? Or perhaps... glad that they got rid of a nuisance.?
Areana Belova would not face such despair... So she smiled on, psyching herself up to embrace this new world, leading her to ask the veteran Avatars:
"What do we need to do now, then?"

As the group of strangers began to scream and panic, the summoner slowly came to. She rubbed her eyes, shaking her head as she instinctively gripped her scythe. "''What...?''"
It didn't take long for her to grasp the situation. She sat dumbfounded as the situation spiralled into chaos, natural given one of them represented that very concept. But she was even more impressed that it worked! Summoning a single avatar was hard enough, but to call so many at once? It was a miracle they were standing before her at all!
But she wished the Creator had been more... selective with their saviours. From what she could see, most of them were barely older than her, and even more inexperienced. She was expecting a mighty band of warriors, not... this! These were the sacred Avatars meant to save them from destruction? They were even wetter behind the eyes than she was!
But... it mattered not. Or at least she told herself so. They had their job to do and she had hers. Just because they were floundering around didn't mean she had to do the same! She rose to her feet, taking a deep breath and standing proud as she worked up the courage to address them.
"Greetings, oh Avatars! Those who have been summoned by Mentis, the Reaper of Souls! He who sends the dearly departed to their proper place! He who... who... how did the rest of it go...?"
She spent the next minute mumbling to herself, trying to remember the rest of it. She had this whole speech written up, but by the Mentis, she couldn't make heads or tails of it! Perhaps it was the fatigue, but that was no excuse. And her long river of hair was still getting in her eyes! She blew them away, but it was a short term solution at best. Why her...?
"...on second thought, let us skip the formalities. I am Edris. Summoner of Metemnis and binder of souls. I imagine Marcus has already filled you in on the basics?" She glanced at the Avatar of Metal, one of the few that already been summoned. It certainly made her work easier.
"In any event, you are Avatars. Elemental personifications, representing the different elements and concepts of Soltera. But I'm afraid all of you, well... ceased to be. In the physhical sense. In most circumstances, you would have ascended to the next plane of existence. But Mentis — the Creator, Reaper of Souls — had greater plans for you. Instead, your souls were sent here.. Bound to this nation and its many territories to serve it in its hour of need. Only then will you have achieved penance for whatever sins your souls may bear. I hope that makes things clear...?"

"..It's okay...I just wish that they won't-" She then stops talking when she heard from Edris, who happens to summon everyone here in the first place, about achieving penance for sins that everyone have been sinned. She hasn't been sin for anything illegal in her life; all she knows that everyone from her earth have been unconsciously have been sin for judging everything that certain people do what they like. She then gets up and walks to Edris. "..I'm sorry, but what do you mean by achieved penance of any sins everyone has beared?" She omit the part where she didn't have any sins on her while everyone else have commit a sin or two. So, how the fuck she was summon here without a single sin was beyond her understanding. he listened to what the summoner said, all of this dint make sense why a god would choose him instead of any other, he is just a reporter, not some hero far from it, did they need someone nosy? now that he notices his nose has become pointy and elongated oh the irony

Helena was an island of placidity among the chaos of her fellow Avatars. She distantly observed the turmoil her well-intentioned words caused, though she frowned at the blunt rudeness with which a distressed young lady spoke to the child, Elly.
"I understand you've suffered," she said quietly to the girl cradling herself on the floor, "but inflicting the same suffering on others, especially children, is cruel and unhelpful. Consider your words more carefully in the future."
When Edris began to speak, she turned her attention there. She was utterly unsurprised to hear that her presence in this foreign land was a form of penance - she had long known of her own sin.
"What is the precedent for such an arrangement? That is to say, how many Avatars came before us? Did they 'achieve penance'?"

"Penance?" he said, face twisting into an incredulous frown.
He took a step forward, gesturing at himself. "You're saying you resurrected us...and gave us superpowers...as punishment?" There was no way. No way that could be right. "Your creator, ah...doesn't seem entirely sure what the word penance means."
He lightly shrugged. "Sure. Why not? If I get to live, I'll play along with this little 'punishment'."
"Kept me waiting, haven’t you? Tch. No matter. Dawdle all you’d like. In the end, your defeat remains inevitable."

The standing inferno laughs as the summoner does their explanations. Their voice is a harsh rasp but the laugh echoes loudly nonetheless.
"Oh I remember the spiel when I got summoned the first time. Penance this and punishment that. Torture."
The inferno lurches a little bit towards the summoner.
"While I thank you for freeing me, you did just draw a lot more souls into this pain. So give me a good reason."
It's clearly a case of backroom political albumizing.

Penance. That meant she did something wrong.
But what did I do wrong?
Areana shared the sentiment of confusion with other Avatars. The girl reflected back on her life to check her wrongs, her sins. She hadn't harmed anyone, insulted anyone, burdened anyone...
The last part was far from truth, she realized. Areana recalled the tired face from her father, the tears of her mother and occasional air of irritation that wandered around both of them. No matter how much they denied it, it was a real thing to Areana, almost tangible like a web after rain.
Melancholy seeped into her mind, preventing her from asking questions. Others were asking anyway, and, upon this realization, Areana was willing to do what the summoners tried to do.
She looked at her hands once more. Areana smirked.
What a fitting punishment.

Marius winced, as Edris spoke up. Not that she got his name wrong, he was used to that by now from her. They didn't know each other well, but he had spend enough time around the young woman to know that his time was better spend with something else, rather than trying to correct her over and over. At least, she was no longer calling him "the metal guy". But like with him, she wasn't really...gentle in going over sensitive details with confused avatars. Also, he was pretty sure the other priests would not like it, when they heard that she skipped the protocol...again.
At least Gale and Blaise had finally arrived. The latter, as usual, making a bit of a mess of things, as his steps left large molten footprints in the expensive marble underneath. It wasn't really his fault, given his element, but Marius still made a halfstep away, so he would get accidentally caught by a stray magma-drop. Blaise knew it wasn't personal.
"Fashionably late, as ever. And here I thought I was the slow one," he joked at them, though it was a somehwat flat attempt at humor given the general mood.
Speaking of, the reaction to the Penance was varied and colourfull. Some seemed to take it rather well, while one was dangerously into it. Marius looked at the flaming Avatar with suspicion. He wasn't sure, if their claim that this wasn't their first time was to be taken seriously. Perhaps their "nature" was influencing their actions already. Then again, he lacked data on that. He had wanted to properly research how Avatars were affected by their status and what role their powers played in their biological composition and aptitude, but he hadn't had time for it. And Blaise and Gale, while cooperative, had been somewhat...inconclusive as study-subjects.
Once again, Marius raised his hands to somewhat calm down the chaotic situation -was that girl sneezing again?- and stepped forward. "Well, penance is one of the ways the locals here explain the summoning. Its not really relevant that much, if you ask me. For now, all you need to know is that we are here for a particular task, which is more or less protecting the territories and beating back what can be charitably called an invasion. Its of course more complicated, but those are the basics.", he explained.
He then stepped between the Avatar of Fire and Edris, as the former suddenly approached her. The flames licked against his chest and he frowned as they torched his tunic a bit. Great, got to find a new one now...
"How about a bit of restraint? Edris will explain everything in due time and none of you are in danger. You will all be treated with respect and will be cared for, provided you behave yourself. And do not pose any danger to others...." The last words he aimed almost exclusively at the burning man...woman? in front of him.
Granted, behind his stern expression, he was openly questioning now why he didn't just pawn this whole thing off to Blaise. He could be home now, reading through the Chronicles of Thesos, instead of having to play bodyguard to Edris, of all people. He briefly looked over his shoulder to Gale and Blaise and mouthed a silent call for assistance, nodding his head at the group of confused and unruly avatars.
