The Town of Brookton, North Heights High School

Ever since that day, the sense of normality that had ruled over the school had thinned and dispersed. It was after all quite difficult to maintain the old status quo when each and every student present there had Demons they could call upon simply by opening their phone. A summoning ritual, encoded and transferred into the form of a computer program sized to be able to fit on a modern smartphone...

"Perhaps it was some vestige of the old world, adapting to the new...?"

New rules had to be created with these new capabilities in mind - Demons had to wait within the phone rather than be out during class unless the situation was pressing. No Summoner Battle during school hours or on the school's main property. There was an old volleyball field, since the 1960s left in disuse, which was allowed as a battlefield on the condition that it not be too terribly damaged - and that all repairs ultimately fell to the Summoners.

The Four Wise Men routinely sent out updates regarding the state of the Summoner Battle tournament, and how it was going to be conducted. Not many knew who they were, and some parents viewed the idea of their children getting messages from vaguely religious figures with a level of distrust. Outright hostility in the case of the more religious families.

Even in the wake of the chaos that erupted, there was still a prominent Southern Baptist church - which had of course issued strictures against this "summonin' blasphemy". Well, whenever they could be bothered to do much beyond rail against the culture war topic de jure.

Some of the figures who gathered in the town remained in compounds and communes, inspired by things allegedly only they could see. Madness? Or a hint of something to come...?

Yet can the students really be blamed for dividing their attention inward and outward? The arrival of the Demons, and those drawn in by them, could only be said to inflame and embolden rivalries and interplay between students that otherwise would have simmered beneath the surface.

"Seek the chalice, or do not. But nothing can bring back the old world."

Two students, one significantly more beaten up than the other, made their way down the central street toward the main "T" intersection leading to the school. The other route down the intersection headed toward the town library. "Honestly, Cash, I do not understand why you put yourself in harm's way this much."

"I-I-I can't - can't! - just let those thugs and extortionists get away with it! It's an insult to my pride as a man, to my family!" Cash clenched his fist in front of him...right before moaning and biting his lip, waving that very hand. He had not even remembered before doing that that he injured that hand in the fight.

Well, calling it a fight was probably being charitable to Cash.

"Thanks for uh, always bailing me out, Wally." Cash turned away with a blush.

"Just doing my Christian duty." Wally cupped his forehead briefly, lightly shaking his head.

No matter how the two looked at the way people approached the school, there was no mistaking this for a day before the Download Day. One young woman rode in to school on the back of her Nue, the monkey-faced dog-like creature responding well when she got off its back and pat its head before recalling it into her phone.

It was a scene almost fantastic in its splendor - students arriving either with or riding upon their Summoned Demon.

The school was a huge four building affair, plus a further, fifth building at the back for the teacher's rec rooms and social studies on the ground floor. The buildings were all three stories tall and somewhat brutalistic in artistic style. There was an attempt made to brighten up these grave and somewhat stoic buildings, but the result was not exactly dignified.

Murals painted absolutely everywhere, including some rather poorly drawn human beings endorsing sometimes misspelled slogans.

The front building - including the front office off to the side from it connected by a hallway - had to deal with quite a lot of the misbehavior of the cults who congregated there. Some of the cults had even left their trash around - which was in some places still littered about.

There was a broadcast playing on a large TV Billboard, at least embracing the odd new image of the school - depicting a Koppa Tengu, Nozuchi, Pixie and Jack Frost all headed to class in a cartoony style.

Setsuna

Setsuna was busy painting one such mural near the front of the school. She'd spend the last week slaving away, pouring her feelings into her latest masterpiece. It wasn't like there was anything else worth doing. Coming here and working on the mural in her spare time was better than spending it at home.

Home wasn't very pleasant.

She caught herself touching a heavy bandage under her right eye as she put her brush away. She slowly removed her hand and took a step back, viewing her work with cautious optimism. It was only partway done, but she didn't want to start over halfway through.

In the middle of the mural was a girl. Her long hair was bright purple, and her school uniform was dotted with splotches of purple and green. Not unlike Setsuna herself. She was riding a giant fluffy bunny over a rainbow, into greener pastures. She hadn't started painting that part yet, nor was she sure where the girl was running to. But she knew what she was running from. The bottom end of the rainbow led to a hellish pit of fire and brimstone, a monstrous hand reaching out of the flames and threatening to drag the rainbow back into the pit from which it spawned. And the girl and her fuzzy steed with it.

She shook her head. She didn't want to think about what it meant. She quickly washed the brush clean and stuffed it in her backpack, ready to head to class and distract herself as much as possible. Not that it'd be hard. Usually, it was... difficult not to think about her own situation, but the last few weeks had made it easy. It was almost a relief. She knew it wasn't sunshine and rainbows, that something like demons popping out of the woodwork wasn't normal. But it was keeping her mind off everything else. Things were changing, and changing fast. But perhaps that wasn't such a bad thing.

Gemma Voynich

Say what you want about the Demon Summoning Program, Gemma thought, but you can’t say it hasn’t made things more interesting around here. Gone were the days when she trudged to class by rote, lucky to catch even a tidbit of something vaguely interesting from the students she passed, but otherwise bored out of her skull. No longer did she have to pester the A/V club president with outrageous suggestions for her show just to stave off the tedium – she still did that, but it was no longer a necessity. No, now all she had to do was loiter near the front building in the mornings, and her fellow students brought the show to her. This morning was the perfect example.

Gemma crossed her legs in front of her on the bench she’d claimed for the morning, brushing her blue ponytail over her shoulder with one hand and gesturing vaguely at the space where the Nue had been.

“Add one more to the ‘pet’ column, Bo. It’s only a matter of time before we’re putting leashes on these things and buying them fancy, overpriced costumes to wear to the dog park. Hope that one’s not sentient, at least.”

Gemma cast her eyes to the other side of the bench, where a now-familiar sight awaited. What at first glance looked to be a normal 11 year old boy sat next to her, kicking his legs aimlessly as he glanced briefly in the direction Gemma had pointed. A second look, however, revealed a few things that were just slightly off about the boy; he was dressed in the cap and overalls of a Victorian-era chimney-sweep, and everything about him was gray, like he’d been covered in ash or had stepped right out of an antique daguerreotype. His form seemed to flicker, and when he looked her way, his eyes were inhuman pinpricks of light.

Perhaps the most startling thing about the figure; his voice was that of a 70-year-old chainsmoker, not an 11-year-old child.

“Could probably do with a funny little outfit, that one. Distract from the…everything else.”

Gemma huffed a laugh. A product of her own copy of the Demon Summoning Program, this odd little Bogle was probably the only being who could be relied upon to enjoy her company, and was reason number two that her days had gotten much more interesting recently. Not that she had to tell him that.

She went back to letting her gaze wander over the grounds, but quickly focused on a nearby mural, seemingly just completed – an artist with a striking resemblance to the mural’s subject was walking away from it. An amused smile spread across her face, and she whistled, impressed, as she made out its contents. She turned to point it out to Bo.

“Well, that’s the prettiest, most obvious cry for help I’ve ever seen!”

Setsuna

"H-huh?" Setsuna couldn't help but overhear the girl sitting on the bench snarking on her work. "It's, uh, it's not..." Her voice was shakey, a stutter every other sentence. Yet beneath it, there was a quiet strength. "...it's not that? I don't think? Or, um, maybe it is? Or..." She glanced towards the school gate, trying not to look the other girl in the eye.

"...uh, wait, do you really think it's pretty...?"

School Front

"Oh come on buddy. You know how it is, gotta get in the phone alright?"

Off to the side, just outside of the school enough to not count as an infraction was a tall boy having a standoff with a taller... Moth? Creature? A big fuzzy thing with colorful wings. The moth creature let out a rumbling chitter and made what looked like a grumpy expression, to which the boy frowned at and tapped the phone in his hands.

"Yeah I know but I can't just let you fly free during school time. It's dangerous, what if someone skipping class thinks you're a wild one and tries to attack you? If you got hurt out there I'd feel super bad about it, so c'mon buddy..."

The moth creature emitted another low chitter and eventually relented and glanced off to the side.

"Thank you Indrid. We can go exploring after school okay?"

With one last, slightly less grumpy sound the moth was recalled to the phone and the boy let his stance soften and let out a breath he'd been half-holding. With that situation done with, Hunter decided to look around and find some people to talk to. Which obviously meant casually stepping over to the conversation between the artist and bench-heckler.

"That's a really nice rabbit. And a cool hell-pit. Just overall nice stuff!"

It's clearly a case of backroom political albumizing.

“Oh, it’s definitely the nicest mural on campus. Mind you, your strongest competition was the carrot with the dead eyes and the ‘Eat Me’ sign, so you didn’t exactly have a high bar to clear.”

Gemma hopped to her feet, beginning to circle the other girl just to see if she could force eye contact. Bo stayed on the bench, watching the interaction avidly.

“You know, people who don’t need help don’t talk like you do. They don’t hesitate to deny it when someone like me makes unfounded assumptions about their work. But you couldn't do that, could you? So I guess the question is…”

Gemma glanced for a moment back at the mural, fluffy rabbit and hell-pit and obvious symbolism and all.

“What are you trying to escape from?”

The approach of another teen cut her off just as she’d begun to hit her stride, but it didn’t bother her too much. It had been a while since anybody outside the A/V club had approached her before school, and two was nearly unheard of. Color her intrigued.

She cocked her head, amused at the newcomer’s bluntness.

“Well, whatever’s wrong, looks like it’s got you a new fan! The people do love a tortured artist.”

Setsuna

Setsuna shuffled her feet, searching for a way out as she quickly became entrapped. She didn't want to talk about... things, but the girl kept circling around, cutting her off whenever she thought she'd found a moment to bolt. It was starting to make her anxious. And perhaps a bit more. "Uh, please, it's not..." She squeezed her phone tight, her voice becoming louder and more frantic as she got more desperate. "...look, please, I don't want to..."

But the newcomer gave her an easy out. "Oh, thanks! It's, uh, it's not that great? Compared to other stuff. But I like drawing and painting and other things. So, um, it helps? With everything..."

“What a wonderful day!” A young man with salt and pepper hair that was far more salt than pepper said aloud, his scarf’s tails billowing in the non-existent wind behind him, “A perfect day for more training!”

Not that you’ve done any,” a voice from behind him responded.

“Nonsense, my friend! Remember, I got up bright and early today!”

It was 5 minutes before 7, hardly early.

“And I concluded my daily regimen of…”

Here we go again.

“A hundred sit-ups…”
Try ten and a half,
“A thousand push-ups…”
You barely did six, then collapsed.
“Sixty-five pull ups…”
You can’t even do one,
“And topped off with a five mile run!”
We barely live a mile away.

Jason huffs, “Geeze, yer no fun, Sylpheed, you know that?”

At that moment, one end of the scarf whips around to whap him in the face, “Pf-tha!”

Somebody needs to keep you in check, who better than your lovely partner~

A beat passes, “Hey, are you listening?

The young man was not, in fact, listening. He’s taken the chance to stand atop a nearby post to gaze at the newest mural.

“Oooooooh~”

School Front - Derek

Another young man with black hair and an unzipped hoodie with Jack Frost's likeness printed on it approached the school. His demon partner practically begged him to purchase and wear it as a show of moral support during their last trip to the mall, and now there was the cartoon version of him on the electronic billboard at the school.

"You weren't kidding about that mascot bit..." He said under his breath, the demon already recalled to his phone gave no response to the statement.

Well, Derek didn't expect one, though he still wasn't sure if that was because Jack couldn't respond or if he was merely busy with whatever digital demons do when not in the human world. No matter, class would start sooner than later.

He had intended to head straight there as he always did, but the presence of someone standing on a post near his path distracted him, largely by drawing his attention to the nervous looking girl in front of her mural and the two already talking to her.

"...You know we're on the school grounds now, right?" Derek said, glancing to the wind spirit that would surely get someone chewed out by the staff if they weren't busy with last minute preparations for the day.

Seeing Setsuna in a state of fluster, already drawn in by the drastic yet beautiful mural she made, Cash immediately ran off from Wally's side to try to intervene. "Hey! Hey! Can't you see the young lady's having a bad time of it? She needs her space!" He was glad though when he saw that she found a way out from the way the guest was acting toward her.

Looking at Setsuna, he was struck by how beautiful yet withdrawn she looked. Cash's eyes darted between Setsuna and Gemma, here he was with his arms out-stretched, in a theoretically imposing position, yet he had no idea whatsoever what he was going to do next.

Wally walked along after Cash - he knew this girl bringing about this drama well enough already. Gemma Voynich could best be described at least by him as a "troublemaker". She stirred the pot whenever she could. They once had the same church...at least until Gemma left it in a big way. Honestly, even though Wally himself planned at some point to leave, he couldn't exactly like the way she did it. Not that he exactly blamed her either.

"Been a while, eh Gemma?"

School Grounds - Jason

“Hoh?”

Jason turns to face in Derek’s direction on the pole. “So! You can see my partner? You’ve a good eye!”

Not that I’m hiding, really.” Sylph says poking her blonde haired head out of her seat in the back of Jason’s scarf.

At that moment, Jason leaps off the pole in a completely necessary flip with a “Toh!” and lands near his fellow student, where he says with a wink, “Besides, if we don’t get caught, we’ll be fiiiiine.”

He chuckles, reclining on the nearby wall.

Gemma Voynich

Gemma raised her hands in the air in surrender, though a faint smirk stayed on her face. She wasn't in the business of intentionally giving random wallflowers full blown panic attacks, but there was something ironic about a crowd of would-be defenders swooping in to make everything worse. She wondered how they'd react if it was their arrival that sent the poor troubled artist over the edge.

Nonetheless, Gemma shifted to the side, clearing a path to the school gates for the girl. She fancied herself an agitator, not a bully.

"Just trying to get to know the artist, folks, nothing to see here. Though I'm sure she's glad to have so many people come to her defense like this."

Upon hearing her name, Gemma dropped her hands, tucking them into her jean pockets and turning to face her caller.

"Sure has, Wally. How've you been? Still kissing the pastor's boots with my parents every Sunday?"

Despite the uncharitable language, Gemma's tone was friendly. Honestly, she liked Wally; he was terrified of confrontation, but that just made it more fun to watch him flounder in the face of it. He was also - though it pained her to admit that this mattered to her - one of the few people from her old church who didn't treat her with outright contempt.

Gemma snapped a finger, an idea occuring to her.

"Oh, speaking of which, what'll it take to get you to mention my radio show to him next Sunday? I know you're already plenty busy fighting the culture wars over there, but a little religious outrage would do wonders for Devil's Advocate's listener metrics!"

Hunter nodded and gave a smile before someone spoke up about the artists needing space. With a soft "sorry" he took a couple steps back and raised his voice so he could be heard at this 'distance'.

"I tried to do art one time but I kept making wobbly shapes rather than anything cool like that!"

He gave another warm smile and then looked around.

"Oh wow, bit of a crowd here! Must be really good art to get a bunch of people to see it!"

Setsuna

"Um, that's not bad? Like, uh, everyone has to start somewhere. If you enjoy it, then maybe you should keep practising? Or, um..."

Slowly, she shrank away from the crowd. She hadn't noticed it until someone pointed it out, but now it felt like everyone was crowding around her so-called masterpiece. She moved her hand to a stuffed rabbit hanging from her pocket out of habit. It was more of a stress reliever, but just holding it gave her the strength not to bolt.

"...but thanks, I guess? But it's not that great. I mean, I'm not big on technique or anything. I just, um, I draw what comes to me? If that makes any sense?" She took a step back, glancing at her mural as she gently fidgeted with her bunny. "It doesn't make any sense, does it...?"

Maria Iekami-School Front

She glanced back to confirm as the school gates approached, then stopped and turned to face the street. The pale white shadow was still a block away and sniffing at something on the sidewalk. Then it raised a narrow, vulpine head and stared back. A brief glitch-like flicker, and it was thirty feet away, "swimming" through the air in a snakelike fashion. Then ten. Maria smiled down at her demon as it landed and scratched its ears, causing the creature to let out a moaning purr and short cackle. Her walking stick groaned slightly as she turned to the front door of the school, still not used to the quiet tap of claws behind her. Each level of the shallow staircase was a small victory, and easier than it had been even a week before, for which she was grateful.

There was of course a policy of sending away demons while on school property, and one time she might even have cared. Despite its quiet and often unsettling nature, she was growing fond of the Inugami. The creature swirled quickly around her in a loop as if reading her mind, and she permitted herself a small, thin smile. The expression vanished as soon as Maria spotted the small group of students ahead. It looked like there was Cash, Wally, Setsuna, a couple she didn't recognize, and...Gemma Voynich. Her eyes rolled in exasperation behind her sunglasses (today she was wearing a pair with holographic eyes in the frames which her siblings had agreed were unsettling). The girl had made herself very familiar to Maria after the accident, even though the two had never met directly. She hoped to continue that streak, and pushed herself to walk a bit faster in an effort to slip past without notice.

Courtyard

"Raphael, remind me again why you are bothering with this sad little place?" the voice came from an indescribably beautiful woman who seemed to float on the air itself next to a young man who walked down the street as if he owned every block that made up the city beneath him.

"Because its simple the way of things, every bit of knowledge gained is another weapon in our pocket to use during a battle after all, Leanan Sidhe." the answer was presented with a air of confidence and strength that seemed to practically flow off of the young man with no effort on his part. Whether it was the way he walked or how he spoke Raphael was meticulous and always schooling himself on how to act. The moment he crossed the school ground his demon was brought back to his phone, leaving him with the silence of his own thoughts and the voices of the rabble around him. No doubt it would be another day of dealing with those who had yet to learn their place. Thankfully he could deal with any stress after school.

Highschool entrance - Derek, Jason, etc

"I thought it was pretty obvious...?" Derek mutters at the praise, backing up when Jason's jump lands closer than expected and possibly into the path of Maria as she tries to avoid Gemma's attention. "Well, theoretically, I suppose. But you don't seem like the laying-low type"

Sure, the staff were presumably all overwhelmed trying to adjust to the new normal and keep some semblance of order. But was it really worth tempting fate?

And now Cash definitely felt awful.

He could definitely see what that girl was saying, and him just butting in probably HAD made her a lot more nervous. Rather than feeling like a valiant defender, he just looked like an oaf. Visibly deflated, Cash backed off, and whispered, "...Sorry..." to Setsuna. He didn't want to make any more spectacle seeing as that was what got him into this issue.

Wally for his part just shook his head and stated, "You know as well as I do, Gemma, that there's only one that I bow before."

And that was when a couple of notifications showed up on the teens smartphones - it was a news report that one of the local quasi-religious groups known as "Followers of Q" was behaving oddly - arming up, seeming to pick up some of the roaming local demons somehow, and staying inside their compound, and the local police department was advising that students after school today travel in groups.

Setsuna

"No, uh, it's okay—"

Before she could say another word, her phone started ringing and shaking. Violently at that. The first thing she saw was news of some cult causing a stir. She'd be lying if it didn't make her nervous, but they weren't doing anything heinous, and it wasn't like it affected her personally.

What did make her nervous was a message from her demon at the bottom of the screen. In blood red lettering and all caps, it made its intentions clear.

ONI: DID YOU SEE THAT, SETSI? LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE'S PREPPING FOR A BLOODBATH! HOW'S ABOUT WE HEAD OVER AND GET IN ON THE FUN? IT'LL BE GREAT! YOU KNOW YOU'D L—

Her eye was already twitching before he finished. With a press of her thumb, she closed her phone hard. She shoved it in her pockets, but it kept shaking without missing a beat. She hated when he got like this. Almost made her want to take her phone and hurl it against the nearest tree. But she needed him, didn't she? She hoped the others didn't catch wind, but it wasn't like they could read her phone, right?

"Uh, sorry about that! Sometimes my, um, my aunt calls during, uh, important stuff and she won't leave without an answer? Yeah, that's it! It's maybe a bit much..."

Maria

She'd accidentally forgotten to unsummon her demon prior to entering the school, but seeing the group of students reminded her to do so with an internal jolt. It had been slipping her mind more and more. When the other two students' phones beeped, hers did likewise, with a soft titter she of course recognized instantly. The letters were likewise soft and sinuous, flickering into being on the screen.

how charming. isn't it nice how some can just do whatever they please. all action. no consequences. no harm coming to them. no pain. niiiiice

"A cult, huh? And picking up demons? Isn't there some government agency that can deal with these losers? And picking on students? Someone really needs a hobby." She felt her hands tighten on the head of her walking stick, but she kept her tone low, almost bored. Upon a closer look, one might have noticed that Maria had her ears and eyes alert to see what the others would say. Hopefully, no one here likes those pendejos.

Gemma Voynich

"Mhm, sure. So is that a no to mentioning-"

Gemma cut herself off, distracted by the sound of multiple phones receiving notifications simultaneously. She pulled her own out of her pocket and skimmed the messages quickly. After a moment, she put it away again and looked up with a smirk.

"Huh. Looks like not everyone has your restraint, Wally. The 'Followers of Q'...I've got my next interview subject squared away, that's for sure."

Gemma glanced over at Bo, who winked at her from his spot on the bench. She certainly wasn't stupid enough to go strolling up to the headquarters of an armed militia looking for quotes, but she had a willing accomplice who just so happened to be excellent at impressions. And she wasn't above antagonizing a cult from the safe remove of the airwaves.

This week's show was going to be a fun one. But first, she had to get through class.

Gemma reached out a hand to Bo, wiggling her fingers. There was a huff, and she didn't need to look at him to know he was rolling his eyes, but he knew the drill. A faint touch to her hand quickly solidified into something more solid, and when she looked down a large cockroach gazed placidly up at her, and the ghostly figure on the bench was gone.

Gemma didn't flinch as the cockroach proceeded to race up her arm, through her shirt sleeve, and out her collar, stopping when it was perched on her shoulder. The deep, gravelly smoker's drawl was even more disconcerting from a cockroach than it had been from a Victorian child ghost.

"Don't skip lunch today, I have plans for the cafeteria."

Gemma remained straight-faced, though her eyes sparked with amusement.

"If you get stepped on, I won't be held responsible."

Hunter looked a little confused by the notification and read it through.

"Yikes. Guess I'll try and have mom pick me up from school today... What's up with these religion guys anyways? They're getting pretty worked up over everyone having pets..."

It's clearly a case of backroom political albumizing.

"...It's a disgrace is what it is, that these people are allowed to set up shop here. These people, I don't know if you've heard, they're violent conspiracy theorists and fanatics." Wally shook his head as he looked at the notification. It was an open secret that some members of the church he still attended courted the ideas of the Followers, and it was something Wally considered an indictment. When Gemma voiced some indication she wanted to do an interview about them, Wally shook his head.

"I know I can't exactly stop you when you get these ideas," he said, "But be careful poking this particular hornet's nest."

Cash brightened up a bit when Setsuna likewise apologized, and he joined in the conversation again - about this notification, "Yeah, I heard these guys have done stuff in the past like hold up dams and storm places they think are harboring "evil". Honestly, someone should do something about them."

Cash promptly went into an imagine space seeing himself and Ippon-Datara leading a charge and making the entire cult run out of town. "We can't stop him!" Head Interpreter Crocin screeched, "He's just too badass!!"

Then the bell rang, and the students would probably remember they had to get to class pretty soon.

But even then, there was a bit more to be said; a pair of students walking by the group related some goings on about the Summoner Battles; "Did you hear Hiroko Sakurai and Chet Daniels had another bout last night?"

"Even with all this weird religion stuff going on?"

"Yeah, they're really battling it out. Pretty passionate. Though apparently they're keeping their aces up their sleeves."

Maria-School Entrance

She'd only been half-listening to the cult information anyway, but it had startled her. Maria restrained herself, however, knowing that any big reaction might spark Gemma's attention. She didn't want to ruin the whole day just yet. But when she heard someone mention a Summoner Battle Maria found herself stepping forward and gently poking one of the other students in the arm with her walking stick.

"Sorry, a Battle? Between Sakurai and Daniels?" Daniels she knew slightly from the school paper. A weird guy. But Sakurai was one of her old teammates, one of the few who had visited her in the hospital. A smart, tough girl. Maria wasn't sure if she wanted to beat Hikiro or cheer her on. "Can you tell me more?"

Jason-School Entrance

“Ka-Ka-Ka…the local religious vagabonds on the prowl…a perfect test of our skill, dear partner!”

Not that you’d have enough demons to run them out.

Jason takes a step forward…away from the school. “And atop that, Daniels? Battling in the open? This shall not stand! Come, partner, dearest Sylpheed, together we shall-GYAK-!”

He’s soon stopped by his fae companion tugging on the scarf back toward the entrance. “You haven’t even challenged him yet! And class is this way, idiot!

“Great…hrk…Jus…tice”

Sylph turns toward Derek, smiling in a pleasant, yet forced, manner, “I apologize for my partner here, he’s…excitable.
