Mortal Kombat (2021)

Just saw the trailer and I really enjoyed it! I'm glad that the movie is not watering down on the blood and gore that made the series so famous in the first place and the action sequences are pretty well done. I do wonder what kind of story we are getting with this movie: is it going to be a character focused movie or is it just going to be a straight up action film that only focuses on the action?

I think you've got that backwards.

I don't think they cast Tan and then wrote a Super Cool Totally Original character for him.

That's not generally how movies work. Some very minor checking also showed it definitely isn't what happened in this case.

I'm just trying to not blame the actor for this since the tendency in these sorts of cases is to blame the actor.

That seems to be the opposite of what you're doing, though.

Saying Tan isnt the level of actor for an OC, saying you flat out wouldn't cast him if he "insisted" on playing an OC (which again, isnt what happened)...

It all comes off a little hostile.

I'm not trying to be hostile, but I do feel, for lack of a better word, annoyed at this character being the focal point and the lead, particularly as I remember Alice and how her focus negatively impacted the quality of those films. I'm sorry if it's coming off as blaming the actor.

It's coming off that way because Lewis Tan is literally the only person you've mentioned. To bring him up repeatedly in a negative context and then be like "I'm not blaming him, though" is disingenuous.

I'm not psyched about the OC either, but I'm also bothered by the fact that they prettied up Mileena's face. The Mileena we saw in the trailer has a normal human face with kinda vampire-like teeth and that's it.

Hoping this is just a case of the effects not having been finished before the trailer was made, similar to what happened with the Venom trailer. I want Mileena's monstrous horror jaw.

Is hard to said, mileena have move back and fort on how her jaw is show, I guess is to make more pratica to stand and move.

in the end is not the jaw what it matter, is if mileena is portray as the brutal monsters what matters, is the core of her chararter.

No, the jaw matters. To people who are tired of the fact that male characters are allowed to be grotesque and monstrous to their heart's content but female characters always must be conventionally attractive, Mileena's terrifying murder-jaw makes her a beloved icon.

Mileena's teeth more or less make her the female face of Mortal Kombat, in much the same way that Scorpion is the male face of the franchise. There's a reason Mileena stans were livid about her being left out of MK11 and wouldn't stop raising a fuss about it until Netherrealm finally put her in the game, and let me tell you, it's not because of complex motives, intensely detailed and thought-provoking backstory, and a deep and meaningful story arc.

MK fans always demand diferent chararter to a game, people bitch about having human smoke and when they got it, they bitch to got cyber smoke because is what fandoms does.

And scorpion comparation is weird because people get tired of his constant vengance-fuel movitation to the point people love him as human with fire power rather that as revant, he is incial motivation is becoming something of a artefact a this point.

My guess will be that it's a more pragmatic approach, let her look nasty but without heavy make-up/cgi and then you can get a big Blade II Reavers reveal for a fatality. The games used the balacava mask for a similar purpose.

I'm pretty sure Sonya or Kitana are the female faces of MK. Not that this is knocking Mileena's popularity but I don't think she's quite on the level of those other two.

My guess is Mileena's mouth grows more monstrous over time.

Which granted, make one ask if the same will happen to baraka or reptile, the more monstros looking creatures of MK in general.

For what it's worth, the trailer holds a glimpse of what may be Reptile: At ~2:23 there's a brief clip of who I think is Kano fighting a large lizardy fellow

(And possibly a rather more partial glimpse at ~1:38.)

Or they could kill Mileena off early and not do anything else with her.

What makes Millenia work, at least for me, is that she does go all out with the skimpy attire to hide the butteriest of butter faces. It’s projection to deal with her complex. But you need the face to be messed up or else the compensation makes less sense.

With Ludi Lin here, we now have three Power Rangers actors that have been part of this franchise. The others being Dan Southworth who played Kenshi in Legacy and Johnny Yong Bosch who voiced Kung Jin in MKX.

Not surprised. At least one piece of merch is teasing a grosser mouth than what we've seen so far.

I'm really not impressed. Colors are washed out, effects and costumes look cheap and the acting doesn't look particularly promising. The guy whose playing Kano might be cool though.

The fact that they seem to be setting Sub-Zero up as one of the primary villains does lend to the theory that OC-Dude might be Kuai Liang

Playing with pratical efect by tarkatan can be bothersome, I think richard divizo, the guy who make baraka in MK 2 said he lose a lot of weight by the plastic mask, I guess is the same thing.
