To our dear readers

Contained within the pages of each of these tomes lies many, many centuries worth of the history and culture of the world we know as "Menagerie" and as much of the wider universe we call "the Rift" as we can understand, gathered from archives, personal accounts and the brave forays of adventurers, scientists and archeologists into the ruins of past groups and Rift anomalies. All effort has been taken to ensure accuracy and unbiased chronicling of the events of and before our time at the time of printing and release (26th October 1027 S.C), with any severe inconsistencies and inaccuracies to be remedied in erratum form.

As we go into our 10th edition, I, and all of the contributors to these codices, hope that you may find the sum of all known knowledge contained herein to be an enlightening experience in education about the world around us and what came before.

Signed,

Acilia Octobriana, Head Historian at Old Firma University

Hello and welcome to the thread that will serve as the repository for all worldbuilding information and lore the players and myself have come up with! This thread is for finished entries only, with discussion being saved for our Discord, to (try and) be written as in-universe articles like those found in an encyclopedia.

The People of Menagerie

    The Humans

Humans, predominantly found in the north-eastern country of Saorant, their home claimed from several wars with their Terran liege many years ago, are bipedal creatures often standing anywhere between 5 and 6 feet in height in adulthood. Some of their distinctive characteristics include rounded ears, much like Terrans and unlike the fiendish Alvar, and smooth, supple skin all across their bodies. Perhaps their most noticeable trait is the creativity with materials on hand, a skill they long-cultured from the resource rich land of what is now called Saorant. Humans, rather than slowly adapt to the problems of their environment with natural traits, instead became inventive, creating innovative tools for solving problems with less effort than it may have taken otherwise, or even develop entirely new methods for doing previously-thought impossible things. This factor of technological innovation was the deciding factor in the secession of their land from Terraforma and the formation of their own homeland of Saorant, though humans and Terrans now share a close alliance now that the humans have cemented themselves as equals in civilization. It is through their combined efforts that the current cutting edge technology, railways and black powder, are slowly being spread to the rest of Menagerie through an investment in infrastructure by both nations.

As a consequence of this and their previous dissatisfaction with Terraforman rule, humans may be found all across Menagerie, though few will be found in Sigmun, but the few that do are phenomenal for being able to survive in that harsh land for extended periods of time thanks to their adaptability to their environment. Their bodies are ill-suited for the cold, much like most races in Menagerie, with only fine and spare hair across their bodies. The average human is quite frail, easily tiring and often prone to procrastination and absent-mindedness, though they are a hard-working lot when their minds are put into it.

- The Terran's Guide to Menagerie, Caius Evodius

The origins of humans remain a mystery, though they are certainly almost as old as the Terrans. There are, however, many hypothesized origins on them. Some believe that the humans were the first race on Menagerie, with the Terrans believing humans to be the flawed prototype of the more skilled creation of the Terrans. The Alvar believe humans were Alvar who could not handle their lifestyle and migrated away from Vandia, passing through Terraforma and becoming "corrupted" by the Terran megalomania. The neighbouring Fenrir believe the humans to have been cursed Fenrir, made to lose their fur and become mostly hairless beasts for their heresy against the gods and their ancestors. The Pisceans believe themselves to be the successors of humans, adapted for life in the sea with the blessings of gods for their fervor. The Bogovi are silent on the matter, while Dragonfolk, in true Dragonfolk fashion, do not care to ponder the thoughts of human origin.
