[up][up] So, they can't use the designs of the Freedom Fighters from the original SATAM cartoon series? I don't think Penders owns the cartoon series.

[up] No, they do own the original designs, just not the re-designs done for Archie reboot. For IDW, they would have to make new re-designs.

SEGA's not gonna let them use those designs, they aren't consistent.

Oh, I see. If the Freedom Fighters do come into the IDW comics, I wonder how their new redesigns would look like.

I don't think it's been discussed on how Paramount could complicate things for the show. Don't be surprised if Knuckles and Tails don't appear right away, since both are slated for the film sequel.

Sega isn't DC, I doubt they'll embargo characters, especially one as major as Tails.

Probably not, but Paramount's likely still concerned about it. I don't think the cartoon will be more popular than the movies (Hell, I think it'll be shit since, you know, Netflix), but any compromise of the value of film rights will likely make them act.

Paramount has the film license and nothing else. They can no more stop Netflix from using characters than they can stop SEGA from using the same characters.

I just realized an interesting piece of trivia. WildBrain, one of this show's co-producers, has ownership of the majority of DiC Entertainment's library of content.

Why is this so significant? Because DiC Entertainment was the producer for three of Sonic's earlier animated shows, namely Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic SatAM, and Sonic Underground.

Coincidence? ...Or maybe something more?

(Probably pure coincidence. tongue)

Mega Man: Fully Charged was rather a fresh take in my opinion, I just wish we could've seen Wily's decent to villainy.

I think the moral here is that, if you're crazy enough as to actually try and make an animated action series nowadays, at least make sure to plan so you don't leave most of your cool revelations at the mercy of future seasons that will most likely never materialize no matter how good the product you turned out was.

Fully Charged was good?

I was under the impression it was rather reviled?

Did it grow itself a fine beard doing it's initial run?

I have been hearing a lot of how people are liking the tie in comics and wish the show had gotten to that stuff.

[up]They were saving all their good ideas for the second season, which is showing in the comic.

Yeah, especially when you're doing things so differently.

With a premise that so solidly alters something that's such a fan favourite, you gotta really hook people from the get go.

Never save all your good ideas for the second season or film. It never works.

I mean, The Mandalorian went and did that for its second season, but then A, that show's first season was already having good ideas, and B, it was the first live-action Star Wars series, so everyone was going to pay close attention to it from day one, thus making a second season practically inevitable.

Meanwhile, Mega Man (and in this context Sonic the Hedgehog)'s fanbases are a lot smaller and shakier than Star Wars', so your point stands.

I mean, I can understand the longing to write a slow burn long term story that saves plenty of juicy reveals and twists for later so you don't blow your whole fireworks box all too early, but in today's world where execs are all too happy to descend upon an action show and gut it to death at the slightest perception of stalling, it's sadly not an ideal that can be met anymore. Let's hope it is, someday.

[up]It's much harder to achieve in animation, where if you don't sell ALL THE ACTION FIGURES IN THE WORLD or are a hyper comedy for ADHD sufferers, you're zapped down at the first chance now.

I'm rather surprised we still haven't heard a new official announcement for this show by now.

Why the backtrack and radio silence? Is SEGA having second thoughts with Man of Action and WildBrain?

Or are they waiting for some kind of digital event? We still didn't get anything about those updates we were going to get from SXSW 2020, right? (Stupid pandemic...)

The Mandalorian definitely didn't save its best ideas for the second season. If anything, the Mandalorian put all of its most attractive ideas in the very first episode.

That's how you have to do it in television, at least with the first season. Waiting to establish stuff people want to see is something you do in later seasons, when the future of the show is already somewhat secure and you have the space to do so.

With the first season, there's no guarantee you're getting a second. So you need to make sure that the first season has everything everyone might want to see on an episode by episode basis immediately, so people know they like your show. Then, in later seasons, you add cool but risky stuff (which is what the Mandalorian did) but the core ideas that people like about your series are already there.

The issue with Fully Charged wasn't just them saving their best ideas for the second season/comic mini-series, but also how the studio (then DHX) and Man of Action watered down a ton of what they wanted to do. Who knows if they were going to execute stuff like Dr. Wily and Zero and Skull Man like they did in the comic. I can guarantee you the last one definitely wouldn't.

[up][up] I'm guessing they wanted to announce it later and the Netflix Twitter account jumped the gun. Same thing happened with Danny Antonucci's Lupo the Butcher series.

I think that if the Sonic show is going to be successful, they would need to just write really interesting stories from the get go instead of waiting until the second season to do so. You want to give the audience a great first impression and if the audience isn't liking the show at the beginning, then basically you can forget the show getting a second season or more because by that point, the audience won't be that interested in the series anymore.

His not being involved doesn't automatically spell doom. There could very well still be people who care about Sonic working on this show. Let's wait and see how it goes.
