Yup, Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai is getting a new anime this fall!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etpG8XYw3mg

For those who don't know what it is, the original manga is inspired by the video games series Dragon Quest and, to sum it up, is basically a fantasy version of Dragon Ball. If you haven't read it yet, I higly reccomend it, it's an excellent battle shonen with lots of memorable characters and epic fights

I think is better to add a single rule since this thread is devoted to discuss the series (both the manga and the anime): if something hasn't happened in the new anime yet, it has to be spoilerd for those who only follow it

Yeah, episode 1 is a great throwback to those 90s anime. Vanilla as heck but competent, and the visual style is, well, Dragon Quest! It's good.

I also liked how the fake hero was dressed as Erdrick

I was also happy to see a Golem and a Sabercat since they are among my favorite Dragon Quest monsters.

I haven't seen the episode yet, but I'm pretty sure it has adapted the first One-shot, which is 2 chapters long, and also the "weakest" part of the series

Then there's a second one-shot of three chapters, which is more connected to the plot and will likely be the second episode, therefore in the third episode the actual, long plot will start

That was a fun 1st ep.

The Fake Hero party feels like a Terrible Trio waiting to happen for the series.

Finally saw the episode and I loved it![tup]

The story is the same of the first pilot/first 2 chapters but there are some differences, presumably to allow a faster pacing, and the fight animation and coreography is great! Can't wait to see future fights animated

They also added some extra flashbacks at the beginning, to foreshadow future events and winks at fans of the manga

I found a bit strange, however, that they ended with the beginning of the next "mini arc" (the second one shot/chapter 3-4-5)

Having only seen later chapters of the manga before, I'd always thought the Big Guy of the fake heroes was some kind of half-orc, but apparently he's just an ugly human.

Wow, a bit sudden the transition to the final scene, but very happy to see my boy Pop making his debut!

And the fight against the robot is really cool, conspicuous cgi aside

The CG wasn't even bad, TBH.

Just out of curiosity, how many of them are familiar with the dragon quest series and/or have read the manga? I never played any DQ game but read the manga a few months ago (and trust me, the story it's going to get better and better)

I played the Lyra game, back when I was young and idiotic and had no idea what I was doing.

Otherwise I've only seen clips of the original Dai series.

I played the Dragon Quest XI S demo for a bit (Before I got frustrated and quit.) but that's it. Still need to watch the first two episodes of this though.

I have not read the manga, but I have played Dragon Quest 5, Dragon Quest 8, the demo for 11, and the Rocket Slime and DQ Monsters spinoffs.

Yeah, third episode official kickstarted the plot!

I really liked Avan in this episode, no wonder he was often high in the popularity pools.

[up]When I first read the manga, I was surprised that its first true opponent is the Big Bad (until he quickly declares that there's an even bigger bad, which this animated adaptation spoiled note ), as I believed they would first face stronger and stronger monsters before him

I really like Hadlar's voice, very fitting for him

New episode is out and it's on fire!!! Truly an awesome fight! I loved it! I fucking love this series, if I read it when I was 12, it would've probably been my favorite comicbook!

And with this episode we kinda end the first arc, I would call it the Monster Island arc and I find it very good. It's proof that Tropes are not bad as, while there's hardly anything new, it does its job really well.

Dai and Pop are well presented as we already see how they are and what they can do (and Pop shows already some depths), we have a beginning of worldbuilding, showing that there are multiple kindgoms and delineating a small story of the world with the previous hero, speaking of, I really liked Avan and, while he lasted little, I understand why he left such a good impact: he's a likable, goofy but also competent teacher and in his fight with Hadlar he showed a resolve that gave me chills. Hadlar is also a good Love to Hate, in good part thanks to his voice actor, even if he's a very simple villain at least for now wink

I'm also surprised by the good animation quality, Toei is doing a surprisingly good job, let's hope it keep up for the rest of the series

Any thoughts of this initial "arc"?

Avan was such a great guy. Props to him. But honestly, Hadlar is a cool villain too. He’s able to identify Dai as a potential threat and moves to kill him.

The fight scene was ace!

Story is indeed nothing new but embodies Tropes Are Not Bad. It has heart. I am excited for the coming globetrotting adventure.
